I want to paint my old 11' Boston Whaler

The whole hull needs to be painted, not just the sides. I have sanded off all the bottom paint, and I want the hull the same color, with no bottom paint.

I originally planing on spraying it with a good gun and compressor. Then today I saw "shipshape TV" and they where painting a boat using the "roll and tip" method. This method of painting is very appealing to me.

They had some kind of a paint, (I forget the brand) that was meant to be applied that way. It had to be reduced and cured before applying. One guy rolled it on while another followed and went over it with a brush.

This looked much easier then spraying it, and if I use some kind of a product that is made for this, I assume I'll get a more durable finish.

I professionally paint cars one or two cars a week, but never a boat.

Has anyone ever done this before?
How's the final result look? Can you tell it was put on with a roller? How professional does it look? How will it hold on on the keel, being witched on the trailer?
Any suggestions as to what product to use, where to I get it and what will it will cost?

Thanks in advance, I know I’m asking a lot of questions and appreciate any advice you can give.

Ryan - I'm half way through my project and I brushed on white enamel made for boats. You can't tell at all that it's done with a brush. It flattened itself a million times better than I ever thought it would.

Might want to give it a shot in a small area to see how it's going to look. I think you'll be happy.

You are a pro painter so my opinion is you should spray. It is amazing how well roll and tip works but it will difficult to get the same finish as a pro spray job. Shipshape used a 2 part poly. Any of them hold up well but scratches still happen.

jsfinn...I'd like to hear an update about your Chris Craft. About opening another topic for progress?

Bill P.

Spraying it will be a lot more work then just rolling it on.

Any suggestions as to what product to use? Any how do colors work?

The roll and tip method works well. Maybe not as perfect as a good spray job, but it is a whole lot easier to do. The is particularly the case if you don't have access to a spray booth.

On Ship Shape TV, they used Awlgrip with a brushing additive. Great paint, but you need to use it outside or with a mask.

The key choice is whether you want to use a 2-part linear polyurethane or a 1 part paint.

The 2 parts are more durable. Awlgrip and Interlux Interthane are good.

Good 1 part choices are Interlux Brightsides and Petite Easypoxy. Not as durable as the 2 parts, but very easy to apply and get good results.

Another alternative is SystemThree. They have a water based, 2 part linear polyurethane that is very easy to use, is very durable, but the result is a semi-gloss finish unless you apply their clear coat over the topcoat.

Regardless of your choice, use the paint manufacturers recommended primer.

Good luck,
Dan

I find that Hard to Believe..........

The Prep work will be the Same,...

And,.. If You're a Painter,+ Have the Equipment,+ Knowledge of the paints..... It Shouldn't take more than 10/15 minutes to Actually Shoot It......

I've shot an Awful Lot of boats with NAPA's MSU 2 pt Urethane,.. With Excellent Results,+ Longevity......

Since its a 11 footer rather than a 21', or 31',,, I'd do it in roll & tip, just to get the experiance and to see it.

Worst thing that could happen is:
If it comes out being the most horrible mess ya ever saw, even that's no big deal. You could just block it down with 400wet, and spray a top coat on it of the same material to slick it back out.

Hey buddy!
I'm still around. Just busier than a cat in the sandbox lately. I just got done remodeling a bank vault. I turned it from a 5,000 pound bank vault, into a 5,000 pound gun safe. In the last few weeks I've burned up 15 pounds of welding rods, and a box full of saw blades, cut off wheels, and grinding discs. Whew!! glad that's done.

Got a few other projects going for the Mrs. too.
The water is too cold for my delicate 'transom' this time of year, so I've been doing other stuff. I did the get heads sent out though. I think the machinist can find or uncover another 50 horse power in them.

This week I hope to finish a few things, and get started on repairing/replacing the braces & brackets I tore up on the back end last fall when I stuffed it. For Christmas, I got a pair of high impact goggles that float. So next time I dive with it, my sunglasses won't become contact lenses. LOL

Getting a early start, I hope to have it up & past 90 mph this year.

How's the floating house coming along? Last I remember, you were re-roofing it.

Hi Ed - didnt see your response. Glad to hear your still in business. No I am not the re-roofing guy, he's Australian, wish I was. I'm in Denmark. I'm trying to find time to continue working on my project boat, between trying to finish rebuilding the house, working REAL long hours, being met with a honey-do list as long as a gorillas arm, every day. Tough, hope things get better some time. Are you welder by profession ? Good luck.
