Will the gear oil stay in a 1978 70hp johnson motor if I flip it upside down? I want to paint the bottom of my 16' aluminum boat and don't want to take the motor off.

Two guys can easily pull a 70. Leave it on and turning the boat will be that much harder.

If things get out of control on the way over, you stand to do considerable damage to the motor and maybe the transom.

As long as you enough horsepower, you can flip anything. And if any oil leaks out of the lower unit you just saved the time to pressure test. :joyous:

I'm with the others. It's too easy to yank the motor and it will be easier to flip upside down and to flip back right side up without scratching brand new paint.

I want a picture of the boat dropping on the motor and smashing the cowl. I would pull it.

kind of like moving a lateral file cabinet without pulling the drawers full of files. it can be done, however usually ends with something getting broken

If you have the power to lift it up and turn it over with the engine attached ............why would you not have the ability to tie a strong rope to a tree and raise the engine up a few inches to remove it........you question is ridiculous

I don't know that I'd totally condemn the guy for leaving the motor on... a couple stout guys could drag a 70 hp tinny off the trailer, flip it and put saw horses under it in a few minutes... It would take a fair amount longer to remove the engine.... I WOULD take the time to pull it but given the right people and methods it COULD be done safely.

Re: painting boat upside down with motor on

it just can't be good for the motor
as long as it doesn't get dropped or flopped down (up) hard the 2 stroke won't be effected in any way other than gas running out of carb(s)... cowling off before would be a good idea.... 4 stroke should have the oil drained from the crank case first....

I stored my '56 rude 7.5 standing on it's head for 20 years and had a merc 1150 standing on it's head for months... both with no ill effects

Now IF on the other hand it does get dropped things could get really sad and or painful really fast

Only having one engine on the boat would be O.K. But you would benefit much more if you put on a second one BEFORE you flipped it therefore giving you more exercise and a better cardio workout.

Usually what appears to be an easier way or short-cut ends up taking more time and effort than the "right" way. You won't know until you try it but my instinct says your "easier/faster" will be "harder/slower."

Use a few people to flip it and you should have no problem if you're all careful.

Re: painting boat upside down with motor on

Are you serious? This was meant to be a joke, right? If you have the initiative to actual paint the bottom of the boat, at least take the motor off and do it the right way. Why go through all that extra work to sand, prime and paint the boat if you are too lazy to remove the OB? And just in case, also remove the gas out of the tank and batteries and every other thing that could go flying as you turn it upside down... If you try this without removing the boat motor, YOU are probably asking for a visit to the nearest ER... Once you get over a certain point the boat will flip itself...and fast too! It is called over balance!

You beat me to it, this is not a wise choice IMO based on what you have shared. I would consider painting the bottom in the normal position before I would entertain leaving the outboard on and flipping. Painting an alum boat can be done very easy in the upright position too.
