Getting ready to give boat make over just have a few questions.
1. What paint should I use topside regardless of price? Brightside or Perfection?
2.How do I know if paint on the boat is compatible clean? Whatever that means?
3. To fill holes, dings, and scratches? watertight or interfill epoxy filler?
4.What about sanding? Any info on this whould be great. I've heard so many differant things. between coats of primer and between coats of paint? Wet or Dry? Grit?
5.Due I need solvent wash 202 and thinner 216?
6. What kind of paint below water line. Will it match the paint topside? Any other info would be great, I'm going with interlux for everything after the way tengals123 boat turned out.

Re: Painting boat?

1. I used Brightside and have been satisfied.
2. Do you mean boat has been painted before and your wondering about compatibility? If so try some on a small area first.
3. I don't see much to worry about here, I used Bondo.
4. Most important sanding is done prior to painting. Lighter sanding in between coats mainly for adhesion, I like 220 dry.
5. I went with Interlux's recommendation and used the 202 wash. If I had it to do over I would use the thinner as a wash and skip the 202.
6. I used the Brightside below the water line as well because I trailer and the boat doesn't stay in the water. It was Matterhorn White below and Sapphire Blue on top.
7. Good Luck!

Dave..

Re: Painting boat?

Thanks alot Dave, I don't keep boat in water so does that mean I can use the Brightside or Perfection all over? Did you spray or roll and tip? I don't know if the boat has been painted or not, I think the black on the boat was painted but I think the rest is just gel-coat.

Dave your boat looks like new! I think I'm going to spray mine. What was the process or how much psi do I need, do I use a HVLP gun, how big of a tank? What about compressor size? The boat is a 21ft cuddy. When sanding I should start with 220 grit dry? When due I use the 216 thinner? What tool should I use to sand? Thanks alot!

Re: Painting boat?

For the initial sanding I used 100 grit production paper on a Porter Cable vibrator. Some hand sanding where I couldn't use the sander. I hand sanded with 220 dry in between coats. I use HVLP but I make a living with a spray gun, sort of expensive for an enthusiast. As for conventional I think you could get by with a couple of HP on a 3 gal tank. Of course, if you have bigger thats better. I use to spray conventional with about 40 psi. Kind of a feel thing here. I haven't used conventional equipment in probably 15 yrs but I always tried to spray with as low of pressure as I could get away with, guess that's why I went to HVLP. Brightside didn't require much thinning, about 10% by volume if I remember correctly. Take your time, don't put too much on in one coat. Spray as many coats as it takes to make it beautiful!

Dave..

Re: Painting boat?

Perfection is a two pack paint. More durable than brightsides single part. The end finish is similar, but after a while the perfection holds gloss, colour and wears better. The only problem is you can't spray it (till kill ya). Unless you are or know of a pro with external breathing facilities.

Good Luck.

cheers

yea a two part paint requires a two part primer if used ....or 2 part primer 1 part paint,,,,,or 1 part primer 1 part paint....

Re: Painting boat?

thanks alot Dave for all the advice, the finish on your boat looks great. Tengals123 I'm still amazed how you got such a wet looking finish, I followed your project. I think you rolled and tipped, how did you get it to look so wet and glossy? I thought you could only spray to get that type of finished look. I don't know what to due now. I really wanted to use a two-part paint but I don't know if I can roll and tip very good.

Re: Painting boat?

you cab get the same finish as mine easly. Just follow the instrustions and thin the paint 10-15%. Roll and tip, works great. Think of the best finish you think you could get then double it.

cheers
