Painting checkered non skid surfaces?

Hi!

I have decided to paint my project boat. In preparation i have come across a dilemma. When I'm sanding the gelcoat surfaces (30 year old fiberglass boat) I'm unsure how to deal with the non - skid surfaces.

These surfaces are of the diamond checkered type pattern that has been done in the mold when the boat was manufactured.

How do I go about preparing these so that the paint would stick and last on them? I would also like to maintain the pattern ie. not grind it down to a level surface. (sand or soda blasting? or some other way?)

Anybody have any ideas?

Possibly a light sand blasting or sanding but you will end up "rounding" the texture....... impossible to keep the old texture to the same degree.

You are probably going to have to sand out the non skid aread and them re-do them after you have painted...

Use a stiff wire hand brush.
