I got my boat a couple of months ago, it's an 89 Regal. The boat was in great shape(guy owed me money also) So I got for a quarter of sale price.....except the guy before must have liked to beach the boat a lot. Can you paint just the lower half of a boat and it stick? Also who can you call to do the paint job? Auto painter? Any chances of it being done in my garage by myself?

you can paint from the water line down with bottom paint. You should properly prepare the surface before bottom painting and you can just roll the paint on.Quite easy!! Charlie

I didn't realize you could actually "roll" paint a bottom of the boat. I don't mean to sound like an idiot...but here goes. The prep work, what all would this consist of? Sanding, primer? What type of paint should be used? Marine? God after reading this back I sound like a freakin 5 yr old!

Just buy a gallon of antifouling bottom paint and follow the directions. It will direct you to sand and wipe with thinners or prime before painting, but YES you can just roll the paint on.Are you planning on trailering the boat or keeping it in a slip???Charlie

Re: Painting just the Bottom of a Runabout

I have the boat sitting in my garage right now, so since I am going to winterize it soon.....I am going to start the painting process if I am able to do it myself. If I decide to have someone else paint it, then I will wait till Jan. or Feb. to take it to someone else. I will do all the prep work for them so all they should do is have to paint it(if the cost is right). I only live five minutes from the lake so I trailer back and forth.

If I am correct, if the boat is trailered most of the time, anti-fouling will dry out too much and cause some sort of problems?

If you are strictly trailering then go with a hard bottom paint maybe even an epoxy bottom paint. If you are doing the prep then you should surely paint it yourself. The prep is by far the hardest part.It may take you longer to tape off the boat then actually painting it.You are supposed to pay someone elso to do the tough jobs and save the easy ones to do yourself.Charlie

Have you considered a keel guard? I put one on my runabout and it completely covered the damaged gel. Easier than paint and protects it in the future for ~$125

I am actually looking on ebay to buy a keel guard, but that only helps for the very center scratches. There are some scratches that are a little wider on the bottom. That's why I was only going to try and paint the base, then put the keel guard afterwards.
