I have a 14' aluminum V hull with a 2X wooden transom. I would like to coat or paint the transom with something to protect it from weathering. Any suggestions?

I have a small photo but I do not know how to attach it.

Is this an older boat, or fairly new?
You can use an epoxy, then primer and paint over it. Its better if you can get to all of it so you can seal all surfaces of the wood. If you can't get to all of it, don't seal off areas where water needs drain out from between the wood and aluminum. You don't want to trap water and create a rot problem you didn't have.

It is an older boat, but it looks like someone replaced the transom over the years. About 1/4 of the board is inside the aluminum, but it only goes down about halfway to the bottom. I will probably do as you suggest and remove the wood, sand it down and then epoxy and paint it. Thanks.
