I've searched and read many posts about painting an outdrive, from cleaning to sanding to priming and final coat. Sounds like this is usually done with the outdrive still completely in tact and mounted on the boat, which is what I plan on doing. To all who have done this, how did you get in and around the gimbal ring and gimbal housing? Is it possible to repaint it completely? The only part I anticipate removing to allow more access is the trim cylinders. Other than that, did you leave all the bolts on (bell housing, top cover, etc)? It just looks like my fingers are going to being worn down trying to sand in and around all the contours of the outdrive.

As part of my spring prep routine, I wire brush any bad spots on my outdrive and hit it with a spray bomb.
Make sure not to paint your zincs.

What do you mean by don't paint your zincs? I plan on using zinc chromate primer on mine then paint with phantom black..bad idea?

He's referring to the sacrificial metals on the drive and housing.

Ayuh,... I paint mine anually,... When I throw it back on in the spring...

Scrub everything down with a green scotchbrite pad,...
Then with a piece of cardboard in 1 hand,+ rattlecan of Rustoleum Black enamel in the other,...
I give it a Good coat for the season...

You know it! Only I am kinda partial to Mercruisers Phantom Black. Yeah, it's expencive, even at dealer cost, but I likes it. :)
