i have never worked with bottom paint as i am a fresh water guy.

got a big ol boat (2005) with anti fouling paint.

i have to repair the hull in several spots..so i have to add bottom paint after.

can i just slap any old bottom paint on it (interlux)?

or does it matter what was on there to begin with?...(ie mixing brands..as this is not a full hull paint job...but just a few spots). will there be a bonding issue mixing brands?

thanks all....sorry for the stoopid question but the search engine is very general

It does matter actually..

You should try to find out if its an ablative or a hard type of paint.. or is it VC-17..( You will know if its vc-17 right away if you wipe it with acetone it will wipe right off and leave a copper color ).

IF its not VC then you should be fine with whatever BP you spot on there ( color will not match but hey..its only a spot )

The One thing I would do is coat your repairs with a barrier coating ( like Interprotect 2000 ) before you bottom paint right over your glasswork ( unless there very small repairs ).

ill go do the acetone trick right now.....

VC is water thin..you would know right off ..

It does not sound like a hard AF paint..probably an ablative ( micron CSC or something ) ..

Got Pics :)

I would not use gel to coat your glass ( unless your using that as a Fair coating ). A few coats of epoxy/reprep is Much better for your repairs before final BP.

From what I remember the interlux " bottom kote" has a window from when you apply to when you have to launch..not wait time..but shore time. Its not a good coating for bottoms that are on land for "seasonal shoring".

Thats why I use Micron CSC.. its good for seasonal shoring without reprep.

Back in the days they had stuff that you put on and had to go back in the water That Day lol..

I know some BP's ( biocide ) have to be applied and put into the water within a window time frame ( like some Petit products ). Allways check to see what the window is..

I generally have to use a Seasonal paint up here in MI..or VC-17 ( the best IMO ).
