painting over non-skid

I'm going to be painting the deck on my old boat soon. I will be using a 1 part epoxy paint. The deck is already nonskid but has some repair places where it has been ground and sanded off. What type of prep work needs to be done before painting and do I need a primer? It is now just a textured gel coat that has never been painted. I am thinking about adding some non skid into the paint so the finish would be uniform and and repair area would blend. Comments? Thanks in advance.

brokeboater,

You have the right idea.

You obviously cannot sand it, so, it must just be super clean.

one trick we use is to wet scrub it with a course Scotchbrite pad and SoftScrub so the paint will etch. foam roller to apply. non skid is available in many grits from fine to course to parking lot sand..

it may be advantagous to spot in your repair areas prior to overcoating. dab a bristle brush with nonskidded paint to the areas, trying to blend in...

and if the gel isn't too porous, you shouldn't need a primer. tho if your doing any filling to the repair areas, a little primer is always useful....

hope that helps. :)

thanks folks. :) well i need to clean it up thats for sure, so I'll give the soft scrub and scotchbrite a try. that ought to get it clean. i had also considered just trying to blend the repaired areas and paint the rest like it is. I may give that a test and see what happens.
