Painting over previously painted deck?

Howdy,

I have a 16ft starcraft that I bought last fall. I bought it from a woodworker and he had made a nice wooden deck for it. The deck is painted an (ugly to me) beige color, but it is a nice coat and isn't peeling anywhere. I want to repaint the deck mostly white with some navy blue. Would it be okay to just buy some marine paint and paint over the previously painted (and cleaned) wood?

I am also going to try to paint the exposed aluminum inside the boat, I know painting aluminum is a pain. Any advice on this? is it really that bad to just paint normal paint on aluminum?

Please excuse my ignorance, its my first boat. Thanks!

On the deck, give it a light sanding with 80 grit then Wash it down with a good degreaser and hot soapy water. Let it dry overnight then a good wipe down with acetone and paint it with Valspar Oil based Tractor enamel with Arcylic enamel hardener. Use the same for the aluminum. Prep the aluminum the same way.

You might want to consider using some kind of an etching primer on Aluminum... Aluminum is a tough material to paint, the oxides on the surface cause issues when paint tries to bond. There are a number of good primers out there for Aluminum, I've used Rustoleum before. Make SURE you use some respiratory protection, though- the stuff that makes it etch into the metal isn't great to breathe :)

thanks, I'm going to paint it according to woodonglass and use the etching primer on any exposed Aluminum. Every paint says not to apply when its under 50 degrees, does this mean I can't paint my boat right now? Its stored in my garage, which isn't heated. I live in MT so it gets pretty cold...

Also does anyone have any experience with KiwiGrip? It looks pretty sweet to me, I might use that instead.

Yep, wouldn't advise you to paint under 50?. Nice catch Andrew, Yep ALWAYS use selfetching primer on aluminum. Never Use KiwiGrip but have seen it and it's nice stuff. Problem is I've Heard it's kinda ruff on bare feet and it's pricey.
