Painting Stainless Steel

I´m in the process of rebuilding a 17' runabout, as mentioned before. The work includes new frame for windshield and glass of coarse. As I want to change colour on boat it will be painted with ureathane paint in off-white. I got the idea of making the windshield frame from the acidresistant stainless steel tube and band I bought and get it painted same colour. Would look cool. How will the paint hold up on the steel ? Will it require special primer ? I will use Hempel - Similar to yours International brand. They market a universal epoxy primer, made for metal too. Will it stick to the glossy steel surface ?

I'd get it powder coated personally...I've never seen paint stick to stainless for any length of time. <br /><br />-Roger

Sand it First.....<br /><br />Most Stainless Steels will hold Paint just fine....

Finally a person wanting to do something I did for years all the time !! First sanding will help. Sand blasting is good too , but sand it with 120 grit Sandpaper if the blasting media is course. You need a self etching primer for the best result. We used a self etching paint that sticks like crazy but it is commercial grade and pretty salty. Auto stores sell produts like Euro prime (Duponts brand) that sticks very good. oh yea keep it Clean !! and if you do sand blast it be careful of the towel/rag you use to wipe it off before you paint sandblasted metal will shread the rag fast !!MESSY!! It cant be much cleaner than after sandblasting .. I normally would lightly run 120 grit over the project then blow it off with pressureized air. Then Prime. <br /><br />My 2 cents then some .........
