My neighbor just got done painting his 19' glass boat with the 96 cent spray cans that wal-mart sells. I bet he used a ton of them. When he started it i was making fun of him whyle we were drinking beer in his garauge about a week ago. Well today its really close to being finished and i must say it looks really good! I didnt think that it would come out as good as it has. Im going to let him boat on it for the rest of the season and it it holds up til the winter without flaking and rubbing off i think im going to do the same. I want to paint my boat as well and ill be at that step sometime this winter. Im not sure what paint you are supposed to use or where to get it. But i am really supprised with how his boat came out. And he was able to work on it at his own pace. What do you guys think about this?? Im curious to know why this was wrong and why should i not do the same? Also what kind of paint do i need. A link would be nice. Thanks guys just thought you would like to know that someone used those 96 cent cent colorplace cans.

By the time you buy all those spray cans you could use some of the correct type of Interlux paint and have a much better result.
I doubt your neighbors paint jobs last very long at all....Cheap spray paint and water don't get along...

The proper way to paint a boat with spray paint cans is to open a can of Top Side Paint, dip a spray paint can into the Top Side paint, then roll the can on the boat.

Spray cans will work. But you get what you pay for. Cheap paint that scratches easy. If you put the time in to prep the boat for paining, then use real marine paint, or at least a polyurethane or Rustolium in a airless sprayer. You will end up with a finish that should last a while.

Several years ago after repainting my trailer with Rustoleum my boat just looked bad sitting on that nice trailer. I had already put a lot of money into the trailer with paint and sandpaper. So I painted the boat using the Wal-Mart paint. It looked really good. It does rub off pretty easy and after a couple of seasons it does fade. This was a aluminium boat, I don't know of anybody personly that has painted a fiberglass boat with cheap paint. The trick is to make sure the surface is clean. To tell you the truth if I had to do it over again I probaly would have saved up my money and used rustoleum, more expensive but holds up better.

ok well where do i get such a paint. Interlux? I have been reading on roll and tip. I think this winter im going to get my boat upside down somehow in a heated shop. But i dont know where to get any marine paint locally. What are my options as far as price for paints? I know interlux is one of the more expensive paints. And after the paint do i need to appyl a clear coat? thanks guys for the help. Ill keep ya posted as far as how his paint holds up. He is taking it out on the bay on tuesday and im curious as to how it will hold up even for the one trip. He has a roller trailer too and id like to see what the rollers do to the paint coat also.

Is there a paint that i can buy at lowes or home depo that i can buy that will work on the hull without buying something on ebay or over the internet? What am i looking for as far as what type of paint do i need? Thanks all fot the advice. I dont know how to thin paint out eather like i see everyone doing. I would like to know how they are doing that as well. Thanks again.

If your trailer the boat and it doesn't sit in the water for days at a time, any urathane paint will work, even Rustolium will hold up well. If the boat sits in water for enough days, paint will eventually get blisters that usually go away when it dries.

Headed over to lowes to see what they have for urathane paints. Im bored and the eagles lost this afternoon. Ill let you know what they have here in a little whyle. I dont know what kind of thinner to use though. Thanks for all the advice. I see my neighbors boat and i want mine to look better now. Especially since he used spray cans!

Menards carries bottom and top side paint, Home Depot may carry marine grade paint too. Otherwise, look in your phone book under "marina's" and you'll be sure to find a way to secure paint locally....

Just to let you guys know it still looks glossy and there are no parts where you can tell that he used crappy paint to paint the boat. I have been Looking at it every couple of months or so to see how its holding up. He used it all last season like that and it shows no sign of wearing off.

the yellow and black is rustoleum roll and tip, need coat of gloss black still to be done. the rest are all $1.00 a can spray paint. held up well, and really easy to touch up once a year.

Is your boat going to sit in water or will you trailer it? I have an 18' fiberglass runabout. I initially painted with Interlux Brightside. After reading up on it I had to sand everything off. My boats sits in the water all summer long at the marina. After I sanded the paint off I applied 4 coats of Interlux Interprotect and then my antifouling. For topside I used Interlux 2 part Perfection using the roll and tip method.

Here is a lund i hit with 99 cent on sale rustoleum farm and implement..I had an auto painter in shock with the way it looked. Just sand..sand..sand..

Went to a couple paint places yesterday to inquire re: Paint for my jonboat.
Unable to find anything feesable except Camo paint from Wally World, even went to a Paint and Body Supplier, $250-275 for a gallon of some stuff that was said to be water friendly plus another 100 bucks for clear seal!

I told her, "it's jus' a frigg'n Jonboat not the "Mona Lisa" ...

wally world has a 99 cent "Color Place" brand. it's just as good as the 5.00 can. lowes and homedepot have a 2.00 can. they use to have the same paint as wally world.

I took a look at your rebuild, it look's like your investing some qaulity time and labor. After reading this thread a bit i cant help but add to it a bit.

If you can find the time to dismount all the hardware on your boat, take a 180 grit sandpaper and cut off the top layer of old gel and just tip and roll from there with pefection ( no priming) You wil have year's of good use and a very nice finish. Cost about $180.00, about 1 hour a day to paint, wait 24 hour's and lighty scuff the paint with 400 grit, next day repaint and repeat until your satisfied. Six day's later you should be done and the finish will be hard enough to hit and dock and survive and last for year's
