Painting?

Anyone with opinions on painting fibreglass hulls?
I sort of assume most folks prefer to leave the original gelcoat alone if possible but substantial repairs and change of color sort of dictate something further. One would then think that paint is the most logical choice.

Sand a bit and roll it on?

There is a little more to it than just that.

What exactly are you thinking about painting? Topside, bottom, sides? Is the boat trailered or wet berth.

If you have an old garbage scow then rough the surface with some 220# and throw some color to it. Now, if you have a boat you want to keep and make it look presentable it is as Dunaruna says.
Here's a good site for marine applications:http://www.yachtpaint.com/usa/
There are many products to chose from and several application methods. It pretty much boils down to you level of expertise and the wanted ens results.

Re: Painting?

There are photos of the boat in another thread about a "1972 Slickcraft with an OMC Stringer" in the forum on sterndrives.

"If" I end up swapping to a Mercruiser then I am going to have, at minimum a big spot on the transom to repair that may never quite match the color of the boat. In addition, the orignal avacado green is a dated color from the era that has not made any big comeback. If I had a choice, I would just paint the hull white I think.

I guess one of the issues is that once painted, there will be more upkeep in the sense that the paint will need to be redone periodically. I just sort of wondered if most of the folks with older fiberglass boats end up painting them at some point anyway.

The boat is fresh water only - on Lake of the Woods - in Ontario and will likely spend a lot of its time sitting on the trailer. I am not retired and that means it will get used on weekends for the most part.
