Hey guys i was wondering are there speicial paints and or primers that need to be used on alum. boats? my boat has paint on most of it but there are some areas that are bare on bottom that will probaly need primered before painting it. Also i have a really good painter that says he would paint my boat but he didnt see it being easy on the trailer. i have the boat completely disassimbled right now so i was wondering would it be possible to flip it upside down and seat it on some saw horses or something to do the paint job? I will have brand new transom wood in the boat and new support wood in the bow of th boat before i was thinking to attempt this flipping it over idea but other then that do you guys thank it would be light enough yet strong enough to take being turn like im talking or does this sound like i will be taken a chance on messing my boat up for a paint job? the boat is a 1986 blue fin 16 foot I think its a sportsman if im not mistaken let me know your thoughts on my idea and let me know any other ideas you can come up with

Thats a good question Catkrazy. Yes you will need to use a primer before painting a alum boat. I made the same mistake on my boat and the paint flaked off. You will need to use what they call a etching primer or you can use an epoxy primer also. This two high solids primer providing excellent corrosion resistance and adhesion. They work by etching into the metal for a great bond.
I hope this info helps. You a can pick them up at anyone of you local auto paint supple shops.

cut a couple of 2x4s and wedge them in tightly under the gunnel, from side to side, across the boat. the blue fin is not as light as you think. it will take several people to roll it. using the 2x4's will help distribute the weight when it is on it's side. i just rolled this 14 footer by my self, but i've been rolling boats for years.

Seems like there is alot of questions about aluminium primers..

mebbe sticky then if all agrees...

MUST !

1. Alumiprep
2. Alodine
3. zinc chromate primer ( after you prep your primer you cannot leave a burn through..spot prime those areas )

go from there..

Re: PAINTS AND PRIMERS 4 ALUM. BOAT???

what is alodine and burn through spots? i have no clue when it comes to painting and prep work especially when it comes to boats and alum.boats. also do i get this prep stuff and zinc chromate primer and alodine at a boat store or paint store not sure where to start looking? ive never really heard of any of it except the zinc chromate primer part, well actually ive heard of zinc chromates but thats a chemical i use at the plating shop i work at but its something different its not a primer like what your talking. what im thinking of is a die for zinc plated parts like that gold you see on like grade 8 bolts and stuff. well any info would be appreciated Im just trying to soak in as much info on here as possible its nice to have so many people on here sharing years of experiences to learn from. makes it alot easier on us new boat owners

Re: PAINTS AND PRIMERS 4 ALUM. BOAT???

Any paint shop will have self etching primer, since it's covered by the final coat, I have never worried about using a particular marine grade paint. I buy mine from a local body shop supply, it comes in quart or larger cans with a tube or bottle of clear additive that you mix in prior to painting. I then lightly sand and coat with a good zinc chromate primer/sealer then the final coat or which ever marine paint you choose.
The self etching primer is also used on fiberglass and plastic parts, so I buy it in larger quanities, but it's not cheap. The last I checked it ran about $37 per qt. I also use it when repainting lower units and outboards, if you don't then most likely the paint will peel or flake off. I have had some luck with a few rattle can paints on aluminum, but I never tried painting anything large. I did the lower unit on my one boat with Mercury's OEM rattle can Phantom Black and it's lasted the last two years just fine. I have an old jon boat out back that someone painted with plain old paint, it looks like a lizard shedding it's skin, and it's just sitting turned over out back not being used.
As far as rolling the boat over, it depends on the hull design, I have seen a few that I wouln't try it with, but most are fine so long as they are complete and you make some attempt at supporting them across the top when they are on their side.

When I found my Duracraft, it was sitting turned over and on a rusted out trailer, it took four of us to flip it. Knowing that the floor was bad and that the side rod boxes had come unriveted, we chose to flip it over end wise on the transom. I slid it back off the trailer, stood it up on the transom and walked it down carefully back onto the trailer which a buddy has maneuvered around the other side. It took a few poles and three of us to walk it down but it worked with no damage.
It was a case of take it now or not at all, so we did what we had to to get it loaded and away. The hull and transom was sound, it was just that the guy that had it had already begun tearing it apart to replace the floor. If we would have rolled it sideways, the unsupported sides would have flattened at the very least.
The hull on mine gains most of it's side strength from the rod boxes and the secondary supports. The rub rail caps it all off and adds some rigidity as well.

I am also interested in what this means. I will be painting an aluminum boat in two weeks so I am trying to get as much info as possible.

Alumiprep - you can get at an autobody suply store..its an aluminium cleaner and conditioner..

Alodine - same ..get it at autobody store.. its a "primer" for your primer

Zinc Chromate primer - your "tie" coat for your paint..it will prevent electrolisis and will handle most of any other top primers you want to put on there before topcoating ( if you want to reprime useing your paint suggested primers.... )

BURN Throughs - sanding on your primer ( zinc chromate or others ) where you sanded down past your primer to metal again..trying to fair out or mistakenly oops your sander .. sanding past your zinc primer...

On a related not (trying not to start a new thread)
I will be painting my boat while it is on blocks/trailer. How should I do this? Ideally I could put an I-bolt in the top and hang it from a sky hook but the hardware store is out of skyhooks.

Should I
1) prep, prime, paint put it back on the trailer and then do the spots where the blocks were or
2) prep, prime put on trailer, prime block area, paint, re-lift put back on block and paint?
3) your suggestions

FYI it is a 21 ft cuddy that can not be flipped
