Was at my favorite ramp late yesterday afternoon. Had just finished loading my boat when this young kid, I'd say around 18 to 20 years old pulls up to the dock in a new 20 plus foot Stratos bass rig with a 200 hp Merc on it. His buddy jumps out to go get the trailer. He backs down in fine fashion. A Chevy Z71 super crew. They load the boat and pull to the top of the ramp where I witnessed the most unbelievable thing I've ever seen. The kid stayed in the boat, cranked the engine back up and commenced to rev the crap out of it while his buddy stood at the back of the boat just looking and listening. This went on for a good 5 minutes. When it finally quit, don't know if he shut it down or it just quit, I told him he was going to ruin his Dad's engine. He told me it wasn't his dad's that it was his, that his folks had given it to him for a graduation present and didn't matter if it blew up that Daddy would buy him another one.I asked him why he did what he did and he told me he liked the way it sounded. I just shook my head and walked off.

I have seen several boaters do the exact same thing, and for the life of me can't figure out why its done. They don't understand what they are doing to motor. If they want the gas burned out they should just disconnect fuel supply from motorbut leave prop submerged. I saw a guy the other day do it with prop just above the water, thing is he put it in gear and let the prop spin, stupidass, there was people standing beside his boat tryin to retreive thier boats, is it ok to shoot these morons?

Sounds to me like this guy will make a great Senator or Congressman. "It doen't matter how we spend it or where we spend it or what we spend it on, we will just get more from the peolple".

Thanks for the posing...we'll be prepared if we see a "For Sale" sign on his boat. ;)

If only society would do away with warning labels, just think of how many morons could be eliminated from the gene pool...... :D

Where does those guys find those indistructable impellers? There is a guy that is a seasonal camper where I have a dock at. He has a trihaul I/O that starts it up on the trailer, outdrive in trailer position, every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday since Memorial Day. Several other boaters as well as myself has mentioned to him what is going to happen. I just can't believe that it still runs with that type of pusihment. My one time of doing it cost me and I cared.

As far at that kid goes, I wouldn't doubt that story about his dad getting it for him was just a front. He probably bought it with "Crack" money and has plenty more money to buy another one.

An interesting post EFHenry.

I think some parents don't realise the damage they do to their offspring when they hand over things like that to them on a plate. Somehow it just short-circuits some valuable lessons of life.

Blowing up a new outboard (let alone a 200hp!) just for the sound of it - speaks volumes about what's going on inside his head...(or what's not going on). My reaction (apart from stunned amazement) is to pity this unfortunate fellow. I'd rather have brains than excess money.

When something awful like this happens, don't you just wish in 20-20-hind-sight that you had gotten the license # of the vehicle, contacted "daddy" and been a fly on the wall when the kid got his ears boxed!!!!!!!!!!!

One can wish :D

I agree with you 100% on that one. I turn 16 in about a month, and I just bought my own truck and boad, and I pay for insurance, gas, ect. When you have to work for your vehicles, and other things it really makes you want to take good care of them, and teaches you how to. Plus it helps you learn to work to get the cash to buy them.

If he were after the sound he could have obtained that while runing the engine using the muffs.

actually sounds like a rich father and a neglected son. daddy tries to make up for the neglect with gifts, and money. you can't buy love or respect.
