Even if the reg's say that you don't need one (fire extinguiser), what would be the harm of having one, even a small one on hand? Especially if there are kids around?

I have 4 good sized ones, in key locations, more than required. If one of them ever ends up protecting one of my kids, it was well worth it. Granted we are talking about different size boats, but the one time you NEED it, you'll want it.

No comment on forcing kids to always wear a PFD, but having the correct amount is critical.

Only my two cents, and it ain't even worth that.

Just makes sense to have all the required stuff available if needed or not... Something to make noise so you can attract attention if needed. Life preserver for each person on-board and all kids need to be wearing one. Fire extinguisher just in case you need it or a fellow boater out on the water. Throwable floatation cushion with a grab handle. I also carry a flashlight, 1st aid kit, some extra dock lines, tool kit, spare prop, thrust washer, and prop nut cuz I'm that guy. Forgot to add a couple of retractable handled paddles and a 200 pound pull magnet with rope to retrieve metal objects like keys and glasses from the bottom of the lake.

And that booklet says i do not need a fire extiguisher cause my motor is less than 10hp and my fuel tank is removable and have no cabin area. So im not understanding why he said i had to have one.
I think you got busted solidly on the PFD issue and that triggered the pre-recorded cop lecture on fire extinguishers. I agree, you were up to speed on that one.

But, hit them over the head with a clear violation and you're just asking to get strip-searched.

Keep a copy of the latest booklet in your tackle box and whip it out next time. Ask (don't tell) how the rule should be interpreted. Good bet he'll back off and tell you to have a nice day.
