Re: Parking the SUVs

If I could afford to carry insurance and registrations on two vehicles, I would get a fuel-efficient vehicle and park my Bronco and just use it for the boat or off-road adventures.

Alas, right now, I can only afford one vehicle. So, if you see me driving around in it by myself, it's all I can do.

I agree that many people who buy SUVs probably don't utilize them for anything they couldn't do in a mini van, but I think that's about to change drastically.

I think you will see quite a few boats parked too. I don't think I'll be using mine that much this summer.

Not me! When I get my government welf...stimulus check, I plan on plowing the whole thing into my boats gas tank. That check is going to buy me alot roaring Big Block stimulus. Zoom-Zoom!

I have 10 registered and insured vehicles plus my boat and camper.
4 of the vehicles are used 7 days a week in the business.

Diesel has around 15% more BTU's per gallon, you pay for energy just like you pay for horsepower. It costs no more to make a 425 hp 496 vs. a 375 hp 496 . . .

For somebody that comes from the supposed open-minded side, you sure make a lot of judgements. Who are you decide who "needs" something and whether or not it's "shameful"? Don't be so hateful.

Wow. I guess I hit a nerve.

Look, if folks can park them and get by without them, that suggests to me that they didn't need them in the first place.

Need to carry a lot of people? OK. Are you carrying them off-road? No? Why not get a mini-van? They get better gas mileage and they carry just as many people. They're also a lot easier to drive. Apparently, a lot of people are just now figuring this out because of the price of gas, but if American manufacturers had built more of these more economical vehicles and marketed them to the extent that they marketed their SUVs, they would have been just as successful.

You want stats? "Only 10 percent of SUVs ever leave surface streets or highways" (Bob Storck. "Sport Utility Buyer's Guide '98".) I know most of the people posting here use them for their intended purpose. Using one to tow a trailer is a legitimate purpose for buying one, but I still think it's a shame that they were marketed as the right vehicle for commuting in big cities.

What I'm saying is, rather than whining about environmentalists ruining everything, or about how it's all about Al Gore, why not just sit back and think about whether it was a good idea for so many people to buy these huge inefficient vehicles in the first place.

Re: Parking the SUVs

I know it has effected us big time. We recently bought an AWD Chrysler Pacifica. It gets pretty bad gas mileage. So we rarely drive it. We only take it when we're taking our 7 month old somewhere because it's easier to get him in/out of. I also have a Chevy pick up. I used to drive it all the time except to work just because I love it. Now it mainly sits and is used to tow the boat. We've basically been driving the doors of my 2000 Buick Regal which is sadly wearing out. Fortunately my wife and I are now able to ride together to work which saves us bundles. I don't know how much it will effect boating. It's been going up 5 cents a day here and all I can say is WTF!

Google "Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel"
New emission requirements, that went into place at the end of last year, makes diesel much more expensive to produce now.

This comment is not political or government oriented so don't blame me if it get this thread locked down.:D

You guys are proving by byline.

Can I interest any of you that want a power boat (as compared to the chore of rowing or the busy work of sailing) in a safe, reliable and much less expensive form of power? By the application of steam to the propulsion of your craft you can take advantage of any form of hydrocarbon to make your way through the water. Wood, paper, coal, vegetable oil, a number of compressed gasses, as well as the cheapest form of petroleum products can be used to extend your cruising pleasure. Change the form of fuel daily if need be to keep your fuel costs down. Revel in the silent push as you hold conversations at a whisper level with a wide open throttle. Laugh as the price of petroleum rises and you still are able to be on the water. Buy a steam boat!

Oops....I think I dun did it. TD's kitty is gonna get me for unauthorized advertising! I guess I need to go back to talking about my MFG Gypsie.

Have fun guys. I hope to see y'all on the water and you have as much time there as you want!

The logical question to follow then would be that once 'We' decide whether or not it is a good idea for so many people to buy these huge inefficient vehicles, what do 'We' do with that decision? Or more aptly 'Who' would be appointed to act on that decision?

We are dependent on the high priced gas for two reasons.
1) Environmental regulations
2) Environmental regulations
[\QUOTE]

3) Taxes
4) Supply and Demand. This happens to be the one that is changing the most. China. Russia. now want fuel more...

3) Isn't really accurate as most of it is a fixed gallon amount except for sales tax. Also, we pay some of the lowest taxes on fuel in the World. Exceptions are Venezuela and Mexico, and some other even lesser countries. In the UK for example Gasoline is over $11 a gallon right now. Basically the commodity costs the same.

Totally agree with #1 and #2 and #4

Combined tax per gallon here (SC) is .23 cents. Less than 7% of the total price.

No, you didn't hit a nerve. I just think you're a hateful and judgemental person. Who are you to say what other people "need" or should be allowed to drive? This is America. Do you remember what that means? If you don't want to buy an SUV then don't, but it's none of your business what someone else's reasons are for driving one. What makes you qualified to judge valid reasons for driving one?

What's next, are you going to decide how big of a house I need or what temperature I set my thermostat at?
