AHOY! As some of you know I have been on a hunt for a flywheel for my 140 looper, which is actually a 1987 18ahphd OMC seadrive 1.8 litre , Still no luck..Everyone I speak to has a different story.I am told that the casted six digit number on the flywheel is the part number.and by others I am told that it does not matter because that is just a casting number.I find it hard to believe that it is just a casting number when they are six digits starting with the same three or four sequenced numbers.582XXX the part number I need is 582522 and No Johnson or Evinrude I have found has the same numbers. In fact I have purchased 3 flywheels and none of them work.I know my motor has the 35 amp charging system and the Evinrude's seem to all be 9 or10 amp.Does anyone have an idea with these numbers.Thank's

Re: part number or casting number?

The only time the casting number and final part numbers are the same is when the part is used or sold exactly as it comes from the mold, which rarely happens. In the case of a flywheel, the number would change when any machine work is done on the casting and even again when the ring gear is attached. It could possibly change a half dozen or more times as different operations are done to it.

BTW, 582522 has been superseded by 583972. That's all I know about that one.

Re: part number or casting number?

Thank's F_R I cannot believe it.Half the people selling parts don't know that..I have asked over 12 people and 6 told me different.Be careful with these people when buying used parts.....Now my problem is trying to find the correct flywheel.BTW You would think OMC would have the sense to stamp their parts with the correct part number...Chalk up another goofy *** pruduction from OMC.This will be the last OMC for me thats for sure,Ps Ireally appriciate the supperceded number.

Hey F_R .Are you sure that was 583972 and not 583572?

Re: part number or casting number?

For the sake of future searches I thought I would add that part number 582522 which supersedes to 583972 will have a casting number of 583146.Which is odd because this flywheel fits ONLY the 1.8 omc sea drive looper 140 hp 35 amp. From 1985 to 1987. I know that all sea drives are 35 amp,And I have to add
that I don't think that Any Johnson or Evinrude 140 is 35 amp.I found they only came with 8 9 or 10 amp charging systems.I also have to add that the 35 amp flywheels were vented. Whew...! What a month.

Re: part number or casting number?

Correct. All outboard V4 loopers in that era are 10 amp systems. All Sea Drive V4 loopers are 35 amp. There is also a difference of flywheels between 1985 -87 and 88 & newer. What you need is flywheel from a 1.8 liter Sea Drive ignition system. The 2.0 liter Sea Drive flywheels are different.

That being said, you could use the flywheel, stator and top bearing cap from a 1985 to 1987 V4 looper outboard. Obviously your 35 amp reg/rec will handle 10 amps easily.

Re: part number or casting number?

Oh,I did the impossible and found the correct flywheel. It had one magnet on it.Obviously this was the odd flywheel in the shop that became the magnet donor. I sandblasted the ring and am going to use permetex epoxy to mount the magnets.I have plenty of them from the wrong flywheels I bought.I heated another flywheel along the ring with propane/oxygen and pried up and they popped right off.I also found that a 3/8 bolt is a perfect spacer.I did reference the one magnet in case it was balanced with the magnets installed. Thanks everyone for all of your help. This particular rebuild has been quite an experience starting from 5 boxes of incomplete parts.

Re: part number or casting number?

Never sand blast the epoxy off of your flywheel magnets. It will create lands and your magnets may not stay in place..
