Well I bought a boat with a 4.3L V6 mercruiser engine and Alpha1 gen 11 outdrive. After my first outing (got stranded when the starter motor moved, PO had bodged a repair!!) I removed the engine from the boat repaired the starter motor mountc correctly, re installed the motor, changed the gimbal bearings and trim sensor and limit switch, replaced the bellows.. So we took the boat out for the first time today. I let it sit in the water for 15 minutes without starting the engine (to check for water leaks) no water in the bilge!! Success!!
So I started the engine, it started great but idles too high, I need to adjust the throttle cable (it's the cable not the idle adjusting screw).. We went out for a couple of hours, and on the way back I notice the oil pressure is changing between 40 PSI and 60 PSI. I stopped the engine and look in the engine bay. I have a load of oil in the bilge!! I couldn't see where it was coming from, so we added another litre (its all I had) and quickly drove the boat back to the ramp (about a 15 minute ride), watching the oil pressure gauge.. It stayed at 60PSI all the way back.. The fact that the boat no longer takes on water is a success, but the oil leak is very strange. The engine didn't leak before I took it out of the boat. I have not removed anything from the engine, except the starter motor, so I am a bit baffled as to what can cause the oil leak. Tomorrow I will move the boat outside for beter light and start looking for the source of the oil leak!! My wife was not impressed.. But at least it got us back to the ramp. The dip stick still shows oil in the engine, so I doubt I damaged anything, but I could have done without this problem..

Re: Partial success

Are you sure it is from the engine? Could also be drive oil or from the trim/tilt system. What color was the oil?

Re: Partial success

It was definately from the engine. There was about 2 litres in the bilge, my trim pump has a small resrvoir that would never hold that much oil. The oil was a black in colour.. I will find the cause tomorrow. I just hope it's not another engine out job to fix it..

Re: Partial success

Maybe your oil pan rotted out. Just a guess, but not uncommon with boats.

Have a great day,

Rob.

Yep, my hope is the oil pan. It was sat on the pan whilst out of the boat so the extra weight of the engine on the pan might have made a weak spot fail!! Anyway I will look today!! If it is the pan, I suppose it's another engine out job, it's far too tight and uncomfortable to change in the boat!!

Throw some more money at the old girl!!

Re: Partial success

Well somebody up there likes me.. I put in some fresh oil, cleaned the sump pan and waited an hour. Nothing came out of the engine. I decided the leak must be somewhere else, so I started the engine (with muffs on) and with a pocket lamp was able to find oil spraying out of a small pipe on the top of the engine (next to the distributor). On closer inspection the small pipe goes to the oil pressure sensor and I must have caught it when I took the engine out. The pipe has been slightly bent and fractured!! According to the mercury web page it will cost $14 to replace, and best of all, its not an engine out job!! I will replace the pipe and then check again for any other leaks, but as the engine was fine before I took it out, I am hoping this is the only problem!!
Even the wife was impressed that it will only cost $14!!

Now what's the best way to clean all the oily residue in the bilge? I have rinsed the worst out with water, but there is still a thin layer of oil clinging to everything..

Thanks Gary

Ayuh,..........

A Brass Nipple of the proper dimension can be found at a Hardware store for a Couple of Bucks,.....

Use a Paste thread sealant,.....not Tape,.......
It's got to carry the Ground for the sensor.....

Re: Partial success

Thanks Bondo,

I was just going to use loctite to seal and lock the fitting.. I thought the fitting might be found at home depot, but I suspect they are closed on labour day, so I will look tomorrow, it has a very fine thread.
