Partial Transom repair.

This is my first post here, but I have been reading everything I can and there is a lot of great information here!

My question is, has anyone had good success epoxing in a partial transom repair? I have a 1977 Grady White Marlin 201 that has some rotten wood around the outdrive mount hole, approx one to one and a half feet diam. The rest of the wood in the transom seems very solid. The outside skin is in very good condition. Also, fortunatley, Grady White left this area of the inner skin off, leaving the inner face of the wood exposed, so it is very accessable.

I do not want to have to take out the entire transom wood and am very seriously considering grinding out the bad wood and epoxing in a filler piece.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Will, sectioning a transom is not the rite way to do this. The transom gets its stregnth as one piece. Cuting pieces in my mind means weakening the transom.

Do it rite the first time and I think you will be a lot better off.

Re: Partial Transom repair.

Tashadaddy,

Thanks for the reply. I really appreciate it. I am just trying to evaluate all of my options and then make a good and informed decsion. If an epoxy joint is actually stronger than the wood fibers around it, and if I put a doubler over the splice joint and a new stringer from side to side across the width of the transom above the outdrive cutout (fiberglassed in) would it not be just as strong if not stronger?

The transom is attached and glassed onto the main fore and aft stringers, and I am trying to avoid disturbing that. The rest of the transom except for the area I mentioned is solid.

Once again, thanks very much for the help.

Craig, 1st i would like to see the best pictures you can get of the inside area. i find it hard to believe a builder like Grady White would leave and unfinished surface on the transom. i think maybe you are doing a repair to a repair. or someone change the outdrive on the boat.

Re: Partial Transom repair.

Tashasdaddy,

I will take some pictures today and post them this afternoon for you. My first thought also was that maybe someone had repaired the transom earlier, but I investigated that real hard and I can not see any evidence that it was ever done.

The outdrive and engine have been changed, however both the old and new outdrives are mercruisers, and I can't see any reason for them to have had to cut the inner skin back like that.

Thanks again; I'll post the pictures later today.
