Hi does anyone have information on getting parts for a 1969 85HP Johnson outboard? The parts I'm looking for is either a complete kit to rebuild the water pump including and or water pump impeller, related gaskests and "O" rings and possibly the pump housing itself also the thermostat p[ossibly as well as I have yet to check that part. It appears to have been and still is a freshwater motor.
Also does anyone know about hooking up a tach for this motor as well. The electrical connections appaer to be there from the motor to the key but have been cut (black and grey wires) and specifically if there is a special tach required so as to not damage the pulse pack?
Also on my motor there appears to be two sensors embedded in the edge of the heads, are these supposed to be sensors for the temperature light and how does one check to see if they're working and if not how to replace them?
I finally got this beast running after some time troubleshooting and then finally taking it to my local marine guy who did some further testing to find out points needed cleaning, re-gapping and installing NGK plugs.
Then also finding a near broken wire from the pulse pack to the points which caused a high resistance when atttempting to throttle engine up.
Now just have to determine overheating problem.
Also information on propeller as it appears I may have a 17 pitch and am told to use either a 15 or a 13 on a 18' fiberlglass. Still sort of working the bugs out of this combination.
Thanks for any information anyone can provide.

You can get a waterpump kit by going to the top of the page and clicking on johnson parts and locating your parts. Tachs are available through various sources, do a search to find out where to get one. The temp sensors can be checked by disconnecting the knife terminal under the black cover and grounding the harness side terminal to ground with the key on, it should make the warning horn sound off. To replace the sensor, remove the water jacket cover and install new sensor. The propeller size is usually determined by RPM at wide open throttle. You should purchase an OEM manual for your motor, it will help you out on any repairs you need to make.

I strongly advise looking at the water pump before ordering anything. They originally had an aluminum housing and were very troublesome, especially in salt water. For that reason, the aluminum pumps were replaced by one with a plastic housing with stainless steel liners, a vast improvement. That's why I say to look to see what is in there. If the plastic housing, all you need is a new impeller. If it still has the aluminum housing, replace the whole shebang with a new kit part number 384465, from an Evinrude dealer.

A tach connects to the gray and black wires. Usually a third wire to the ignition switch is also required. The tach is driven by the alternator and is not connected to the pulse pack. Nothing unusual about the required tach, just a regular alternator tach for 6 pulse alternators. Most of them have a switch on the back for number of pulses.

Are you sure you have a sensor in each head? I don't think so. The overheat sensor is in the starboard head. There is a second sensor in the top of the cylinder block beside the water cover. That one drives the automatic choke. There was a service bulletin on rewiring to eliminate the one for the choke, so if that work has been done, the sensor is not doing anything and is not even needed.

I agree, 13 or 15 prop. Probably a 15. Depends on how heavy that boat is and the loads you are carrying.

EDIT: Back to the tach. The gray wire in the control does not normally connect to the gray wire at the terminal strip on the motor. That wire does go to the pulse pack and is for a special tachometer which is rare as chicken teeth. The 6 pulse alternator tach connects to the terminal with the yellow-with-gray stripe wires. So, check the terminal strip connections before adding a tach.

BTW, the "power pack" or "pulse pack" is properly called an "amplifier" on that engine. Use the right word and impress people with your knowledge.
