Hi Guys,

I'd really appreciate a few pointers on this as the Yamaha manual now I've found it isn't a lot of help. It shows how to dismantle everything but doesn't specify what needs to come out to replace the steering bushes or indeed whether they just drop out or need some tools to remove/refit.

Can someone help with a sequence, e.g. can I lift the engine up and out with the gear shift shaft in place or does it have to come out and if so how much of the power head (like induction manifold!)needs removal to withdraw the shifter assembly? For all I know maybe the lower leg has to come off to allow re-engagement of the shifter!

Also will the engine balance OK lifted by the two brackets provided on top of the crankcase when the tilt/clamp bracket is left on the transom?

I'd really appreciate any insights you can offer on this or any similar vintage Yam!

Basically pull the powerhead and gearcase. Shouldn't need to pull the shift shaft. The powerhead can hang from the brackets. Lot easier job with the gearcase out of the way.

Thanks Ray. Can you elaborate on why the gearbox should come off? It looks like the engine needs to move aft both to withdrawthe two pairs of engine bolts (21 and 29 in attached diag) to allow the lower leg clear the steering tube before it can lift up. To move the engine aft won't the the shift rod have to come out?

I may be planning this all wrong but my assessment was I''d need to disconnect the Trim&Tilt wiring inside the powerhead, then undo the two nuts (33 in attached diag) at the top of the steering tube and then the two nuts (22) at the lower end.

Perhaps you're advocating just removing the circlip 15 after the gearbox is off and just lifting the engine straight up?

Many thanks for any additiona detail you or anyone else can provide.

the gear box comes off easy enough. it is easier than trying to stab the power head back on during re-assembly. you can replace your water pump impeller while you are at it.

i have never worked on the steering bearings before. if you have to remove the motor mounts, it can be very difficult. I just took some parts off of a donor motor and never was never able to get the motor mounts off. broke a couple of bolts in the process.

breaking 1 bolt off will cost more than paying a good mechanic. be careful.

Hey, did you ever get the bushes replaced? I have the identical problem and found your thread while searching for a solution. I hate you may have had to go it alone, but if you did and were successful, I'd love to hear what you had to do!

A little follow up on this for anyone researching the subject.

Unfortunately this became a full scale powerhead removal to get at the bearings and therefore it was checked into the dealers over the Winter.

What was nasty was that the bearings were in fact OK and the play was caused by corrosion where the steering tube is splined into the lower steering clamp bracket. That's the bracket that the vibration-absorbing rubber mounts bolt horizontally into. The tube is steel so had chomped into the allow bracket.

It's a weak point to watch for buying an F100. If there's play in the steering at the lower pivot point - at best it's the bearings, at worst it's the bracket has corroded. In either case it's a vey expensive powerhead removal.

If you own an F100 check that area for corrosion and apply grease liberally anyway.
