I would like to know the year this was made: Mod#: GG18801A Ser#: 36X872380. I have a little spark on one plug. Both coils are badly cracked. Would NAPA be able to get these? It has not been in the water for years so I think I may need a new impeller. Where would I get this? What spark plug does it take? Both were different. The person who is involved with me in this project seems to think the condensers are bad. Is there a way to test them? It is made by Gale.

1963, very similar to the Johnson/Evinrude of about that size, maybe 5 1/2 or 6Hp. Coils are available right here on iboats. Impeller and tune-up kits too. NAPA sells the same parts under the same numbers used here, but they charge more. iboats has some really impressive prices. Click the Marine Store tab on the top left of the page and happy hunting. You can even go the Johnson or Evinrude dot com website and find parts diagrams. Points gap .020, J4C Champion .030. Some prefer J6C, I have no problem with that. Run 32:1 with any marine 2-stroke oil. Some prefer 24:1, but use the J6C if you do. :)

I believe that they cast their own blocks and midsections, but used Johnnyrude parts and gearcases. All three were OMC subsidiaries. Johnsons and Evinrudes were made in Waukegan and Gales were made in Galesburg, all in Illinois.

Just to add to the very good advice you've already got, the condensors on these very rarely go bad, but they're not easy to test without at least a capacitance meter. On the other hand, the coils are famous for cracking over time which will cause a weak spark.

Have a look here:
(If you're careful setting the .020" point gap then there's really no reason to adjust them further. )

It is a 63 many parts will interchange with the similar E/J
5 and 5.5 hp motors among some others. Most routine parts are readily available.
You could get parts right here, your friendly E/J dealer or NAPA auto parts.Condensers seldom fail but they are also available.Make sure that the flywheel key and keyway are in good shape.
Use J6C plugs set at .030.Set the points at .020.
