I have an early 80's Mariner 25hp motor and decided to do the water pump again. It's been a couple years.

This time I wanted to do the kit, as the last time I just replaced the impeller and feel it could have come out better.

Anyway I went pricing parts online this morning, and found the kit to be priced well over $100 from Mercury, and nearly $100 at Sierra. Heck, the impeller was listed at like $80.

I stopped by my local dealer, who ran my model number, and also was able to to compare a possibly similar Yamaha part.

This is a Yamaha built motor, but all the parts lists for Yamaha only go back to 84. Upon looking at the diagrams and the actual parts, it appeared as if the Yamaha part was the same, yet priced at about 25% of what his list on the Mercury part was.

That's right the Merc supplied pump kit for the Mariner was $160 list and the Kit for Yamaha was about $40

I brought home the Yamaha kit, found it quite complete with gaskets, key, wear plates, cup, housing, tube seal, impeller, even bolts, installed it and feel good about saving $120

I found a similar situation when I wanted to "prop it", with the very nice quality Yamaha prop at a considerable savings over the Merc supplied unit.

I know this is just that "obscure" occurance, but sometimes it pays to have a great parts man that doesn't mind working with his customer.
