I just picked up an 1990 Bayliner Capri 1870 for free that needs a lot of work. It has an 90 hp L-Drive engine, that I have not read too many good things about. I took it to a local boat repair place in town and he will not even work on this type of engine, but is going to do a thorough inspection on it to let me know what is wrong with it. Once I get the results I am wondering what will be my best route to go if their is alot wrong with the engine. Should I pay to get it fixed, Is there somewhere I can get it rebuilt, or can I buy a new one without spending an arm and a leg? Also I need to replace all the seats in the boat, does anyone know where I can get replacement sets and/or parts for this boat model. Thanks in advance for any advise you can provide.

Cut your losses now. Seriously. I am NOT just a hater. There is pretty much not worse boat available to put money into. Parts and service are pretty much non-existent and the L-drive wasn't much good to begin with. It was custom hull design so you can't even realistically convert it some other type of power.

Thank you for your honest reply. I have allready noticed that it is hard to find parts and or someone to service this boat. However, I can not afford to just throw this one away and buy a new one. I was wondering if there is anyplace I can get the engine rebuilt so I can get a couple of summers out of it, when I will be in better shape to just buy a new one.

For the seats and other parts see my earlier thread:

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=381861

Any mercury dealer has access to parts for the L-Drive Force engine. However, many parts are NLA (no longer available)

Honestly, like the previous poster, the L-Drive engine and hulls are simply not worth any significant investment (say no more than $500 total). The design took the worst fundamentals of two worlds (Outboard and sterndrive) and combined them.

Let us know how you make out & good luck!

If you can get what you need to fix it on ebay and do the work yourself or have a buddy do it....go for it. Use it for a while but sell it while it's still running!!!!

The powerhead won't be a problem, since it is essentially the same as a regular Force outboard of the same vintage and HP. However, the outdrive is another matter. I agree that this isn't something to sink a lot of money into. Maybe some seat covers to get you through a couple of years.
