Hey just looking for some suggestions on what parts I should keep handy on the boat for my 68 Johnson 20hp. Things like extra plugs, that kind of stuff, things I would most commonly need to replace on the water so the day will not be ruined if anything happens? Thanks in advance

Spark plugs, prop drive pin, prop nut, cotter key. Put 'em all in a ziploc sandwich bag. A spare prop is also a good thing to have along.

needle nose plyers, and a wrench for the prop nut.

I carry 2 fuel lines, as often time one does not want to pump fuel right.

I have to be careful or I would have a Nascar trailer on board my 12 foot where space is already tight. One other thing you must have is a loose starter rope for the flywheel. I used mine the first time I took it. A real stroke of luck. Rick.

This will be my first summer with my "own" boat, so I am working on a list of stuff to keep with me, although there won't be too much room, but you can cram a lot of stuff in an old military ammo box! Keep 'em coming!

I have a couple boats that I go back and forth with, so I have my "boat box" which is just a basic toolbox. In it I have a sponge (for bailing) my whistle, screwdrivers, a battery tester, duct tape, electrical tape, flashlight, batteries and that all important piece of rope in case my starter rope breaks. I typically dont take any parts with me.

The basic tools that fit your motor, plugs, hose clamps, fuel line, prop, prop nut, pin, fuses, sharp knife.
Pick the best from everyones list and you should be O.K.

Has anyone ever really had a plug break randomly on them?

I mean really, chances are it isn't going to just snap in 2 while out out.

And if its wet, just use your shirt and clean and reinstall, done.

Re: Parts to keep onboard?

I used to always carry to my boat one of these:
available very cheap at places like Walmart etc
http://www.preparedness.com/smalutsupbox.html

It floats and I kept my flares, whistle, emergency flag, First aid stuff, black plastic tape, fuses, small coil of of elec wire, wire ties, matches, flashlight, spare in-line fuel filter, extra gas cap for my 6 gal tank etc. My starter rope stores under the outboards cover and shear pins are in there too. My outboard also came with a small tool kit with all the stuff you might need like plugs, extra plastic kill switch key, screwdriver, wrenches, plug socket etc.

Last boat I bought now has lockable lockers, so I still keep everything in an Orange waterproof case which is a little bigger now. It's an orange Pelican case.

The plastic zip lock bags would always break on me at some point. Nice part of putting that kit together is that you have a lot less stuff to have to remember to bring each trip on smaller boats.

Not part of the kit . . . but the best tip I ever got was from my boater BIL who said to always carry a spare 2 gal plastic gas can. I keep it in the bow hatch and it's been a lifesaver when I'm out on big waters and am running low on fuel. I've pulled up to the only gas dock around and they are closed or out of gas! Also brings me up to over 8 gallons on board.

I think the one I bought is 2.5 gal and was about $10 at sears. My 6 gal tank has no gauge and it's in a closed locker, so having the spare allows me not to have to keep getting up and checking it. I can travel a huge distance with 2 gallons at cruising speed when I've had to use it.

I say a cell phone and a fifth of something to keep you warm & relaxed. Do your repairs at home where you will not lose tools or parts overboard. If you boat in areas of tides...a good anchor & paddles.

If you have to have anything, this is what I have: a set of plugs, rope if starter/recoil fails, enough gas.

There is really only so much you can do on the water, plugs and a prop pin, whatever fuses your motor uses, maybe a spare prop and basic tools, a couple crescent wrenches and screw drivers.

I took an old plug socket and welded a big nut to the end so I can use a screw driver to get plugs out and don't need to carry a ratchet.

Plug may quit sparking properly though through insulation breakdown around centre electrode or similar.

yea, I don't think plugs are nessecary to carry on board, you can limp home if one plug breaks, which is very rare.

Re: Parts to keep onboard?

Fortunately, my kicker and my main use the same plugs, so I always have spares on the other motor.

I'm new to boating, but I figured having a trolling motor to get me back in case of engine trouble. Found a good one on CL for cheap.

Re: Parts to keep onboard?

I've been boating for 40 years and never had a plug go bad while I was on the water.

I still carry the spares, but I change the plugs at the end of each season. For a couple of bucks each that's pretty cheap insurance.

Re: Parts to keep onboard?

Had to do that last year, 2 miles down stream form the launch and the motor wouldn't start so we had to troll back, this was with an 80s OMC troller with maybe 20-25 lbs thrust, took 2-1/2 hours.

I have a Motorguide W55 wireless now so if it happens again it shouldn't be as bad.
