Re: passed on her

Buy one that looks good, runs good, everything works, fits the intended purpose, in your price range and doesn't leak. Brand name should not be the first thing on your list.

boat trader online is good, ebay, craiglist. glad you passed, it sure sounded like a p.o.s. my boat is ten times better than that and I could only get 3000 to 3500 for it. there are alot of better boats out there for your price range, just don't get to emotional attached to a boat without having it checked out and a long test drive

Silvertips advice is spot on.

The only thing I would add is that taunting a mod is never a good idea, esp. Don S.. He's not exactly warm and fuzzy to begin with, but he's a killer tech with a low tolerance for stupid. I expect you'll find this thread locked as well once he finds it...

Re: passed on her

I went looking last night at a boat. It was one of those things where I dearly wanted to like it...it was a little cheaper than I can pay and little bigger than I thought I could get. But there was some slop in the steering, bad upholestry, adhesive marks all the way around the hull from I assume velcro for a cover, lots of gelcoat oxidation and generally did not looked well kept. So I'm passing up on it too...didn't even get to testing it in water.

I like these threads...it's easy to find just 'a boat', it isn't as easy to find a 'great boat'...

Make a list of the types of boats you are interested in. Then go look at Craigs list and the local papers, postings at the food stores, etc in your area and see what you can find. Keep your mind open. If your into pleasure boating, look at bow riders and cuddy cabins. Don't waste your time on a center console if you don't fish, etc.

iboats has a good listing of used boats, just browsing them will give you and idea what is available privately.

People who take good care of their boats usually have good records of the mantenance that was done. So a well documented boat is usually a good sign.

Avoid dealers, they usually inflate the prices of used boats way above NADA pricing. Often 2 to 3 times.

I would stay away from ebay unless you are very experienced with boats. You are rolling the dice with ebay.

Good luck.
