patching underwater screw holes

I was crawling around under the boat and noticed a lump. The lump turned out to be a screw, with a rubber pad surrounded by sealer. If I were to remove the screw, would Marine Tex be the product to use? Also, would the area need to be painted after the patch. <br /><br />This is definitely an underwater portion of the hull(starboard sice, bottom, near stern). The boat is on a trailer most of the time.

Might need to do a bit more research such as: Is the screw doing something useful like bonding the fuel tank (thats what I've got). Is it leaking? Is it already a reasonable repair?<br /><br />Aldo

yeah, like DUNA said..<br /><br />but yeah,, all things being equal,, marine-tex would be the ticket..<br /><br />grind away alittle surround area.. even 'divit' grind the hole alittle.. all so to have a good bond an alittle thicker at the hole.. as so not a thin surface coat..<br /><br />no need to paint.. since no uv rays..

A countersink bit gives a nice hole that is shaped for water pressure to push the fill plug towards the hull with ever being able to push it through.

Thanks for the replies advice guys. <br /><br />It seems to be holding up. Looks like the used 5200 on it. I dont think it does anything structural, no built in gas tank. <br /><br />Its near a place where the seats are screwed in. As near as I can tell, with the spacing, its through the hull and into the floor.
