From the article: "Experts agree that behavior at school sports events is not what it used to be.

"Parents are more intense, family members are more intense, siblings are more intense," said Christine Brennan, a USA Today sports columnist and ABC News consultant. "Everything is ratcheted up."

My question is why. High schools (and others) have been having ball games for decades. Why now is there so much violence - or is there? Maybe we're just now hearing and seeing it with today's technology. Maybe it's been going on all along and we just never heard about it. Dunno.

Hey BB, This is only a guess, (I don't read minds very well). I have lived in Seattle all my life. There always has been booing and other things at HS games, (so my guess is nothing has changed at all). Seattle is full of libs who worship their government. They have been growing much less tollerant over the last 20 years, IMHO. They have been looking to impose greater control here on everything, (in all ways, this is just one example). Some of it is technology, (cameras et al), but the main culprit is a total lack of tollerence. It is everywhere not just in Seattle. Just look at most public Universities. Very intollerant. I must be tollerent as a Cornservative as I live and work amoung these people. I used to live in NE Seattle, just North of the UW. There are many UW profs in the ol' hood I'm referring to, VERY VERY LIBERAL. Any idiot who would post a Republican sign on their yard at the time of an election would get real trouble, (I'm not kidding here). I remember comming home, (I owned that house for 25 years), and pulling through an unmarked intersection at 3-4 miles per hour and parking in front of my home, (corner house). One of my neighbors who lived a few blocks from me was starting to cross the intersection and got real mad that I pulled through and parked. The law is that you must stop if someone starts to cross, but I was already commited due to my very slow speed, and did not want to stop in the center of the intersection. I let him stand over me and rant for a long time, (I felt that it was a close call and I did not want to act out too quickly). After really ripping me up, I finally had it and got out of the car got in his face, and with my bad breath: asked him if I should rip his head off and spit in his neck. He was shocked, and never bugged me again. That is how to deal with Seattle libs! JR

There is alot more violence today. More and more parents believe that their little Johnny is professional material, when in reality little Johnny will be just like the Ole man just a school boy wannabe. I coached little league and pee wee football. I've had parents screaming at their kids from the stands for striking out.

Where I live the bleaches use to be along each side of the base line from home plate. The bleaches now are out in the outfield and a dark mesh blocking screen runs along the back stop so that parents can't verbally harass kids from the other team or their own.

There is something wrong with society today.

Hey Fly Rod, Maybe, but I always remember some jerks being pushy about their kids. We both live in VERY Liberal States. In fact most Libs are in large cities near the water, so iboats may not be a very acurate read about this matter. JR

Could be: Me Bro. Only havin' a single brain cell n' all: can't say for sure. After ponderin' this matter in the past, I figured it was a 'dependence' issue. I fibbed a li'l earlier on this thread, I lived in WWW, (That's Walla Walla WA), for a while and I found that farmers are real independent and self sufficient, n' tend to be Cornservative. The city slickers are unable to do anything if the power goes off or anything happens where they can't push a button. That's why boat owners tend to be more Cornservative too, (they may have ta hay wire n' bubble gum somethin' ta get outta the puddle there stuck in). Me Bro in Cordova AK, finds the same thing. Have ya met many AK fishermen who are Libs me Bro? Somethin' ta ponder me thinks. JR

Murky - how'd you turn sports violence into a lib vs con issue?

I think it has way more to do with what people (both parents & kids) see the college & pro sports doing. You can't go a week without seeing a fight on TV in some major arena. People see that & think it's OK - even expect it to happen as part of the game.

Heck, now it even seems like every TV show is a competition - it ain't a show if it doesn't have contests & winning & losing & some poor sap getting eliminated at the end.

Can't see where lib or con enters into it. But that's just me.

Well Stevieray, I live in a very Liberal metropolitan area. I assure you Cordova Alaska would not even Cornsider doing what is proposed here in God's country. All my life Liberals have been intent on growin' the scope n' breadth of momma Government. Do Cornservatives want higher taxes? Now ask the same questions about Libs. How does government get bigger: Stevieray? The tax revenues are just like blood feedin' the tumor. This corncept is in 'Ronald Reagon's 101 class': Stevieray. Respectfully, (and I mean it) JR

When I was 14 my parents explained to me that my chances of ever owning a professional sports team were far better than my chances of ever playing in one.

Well I think it is rooted in the political divisiveness that has wracked our country for the past three or four years.

The left is angry and looking for someone to take it out on. The right is angry and looking for someone to take it out on.

You can see it in the trolls and angry exchanges that have become so common here. This thread, which had nothing to do with politics, has already turned into a political debate.

That anger spills over into all sorts of confrontations. They don't need to have anything to do with politics.

This thread has nothing to do with politics. ONE more political speech and it goes away.

Well I have a grown up 22 year old hockey player and a 19 year old retired ballerina who could not take the back stabbing anymore

The BS things I saw go on behind the scenes at the Ballet Companys my daughter was in to get parts for there children would really blow your mind

I thought people in the arts were supposed have some level of refinement ? NOT A BIT

But then seeing adults have knock down drag out fistfights at hockey games over the kids bumping each other was not uncommon either

I don't think anybody wants the govt involved - they just don't want high school kids getting booed from the stands & possibly having it escalate to violence - at least that's what I got out of the article.

When I was in school, there were always plenty of teachers & coaches around to keep things from getting out of hand. I guess no one sees them as authority figures any more.

So you think they're going to need to pass laws?

I really don't know why they get so angry.
Score isn't kept, so there are no winner or losers

Can't hurt the kiddies feelings you know, it may make them try harder the next time so they would win.

Everyone gets a trophy no matter how horrible a player you are. See above for reason.

Just a sad situation, and it's coming to a town near you!
