I am looking for a mapping gps unit and there are lots of them to choose from. But i already have a pda. You can buy the antenna and the software to make it a gps for alot less money. Has anyone done this? If so...how does it work?..any drawbacks?..

Re: pda + gps?

If your PDA can run the necessary software with maps many handheld receivers can supply the X/Y data.

For example, a Garmin GPS 12 or equivalent can drive a chartplotter display in any system that can run Mapsource.

You can't do it with an antenna, you need the receiver as well.

I doubt that a PDA can run Mapsource, but many laptops can.

Some of those mushroom looking antennas have the receiver built into them. You tell an antenna with the receiver in it buy the price tag…or look at what is written on the box. :)

I know it has the receiver built in...just wondering if anyone has one of these kits and how they work. Does it have the same features as a regular mapping gps unit? How does it perform?

got one from radio shack for 50 bucks. came with the reciever/antenna and a disk with delorme maps on it. works great on land havent had the chance to use it on the water yet. you have to download the maps you want from your computer before you can use it though. Works really well.

oh yeah the PDA isnt included. Got a great deal on a palm. :) Only problem with PDA is that the battery is built in so if your on the water and battery goes dead your pretty much stuck. I am going to put a small ac/dc inverter onboard to run the charger.

Formula1974 – it might be easier to put a 12v cigarette adapter on the boat if there is such a power adapter/cord available for using the palm in a car.

I havent been able to find an adaptor to fit it. I already put one of the adaptors on the boat for a spotlight. :)
