I happened across this website a few days ago and found everyone pretty insightful so...

I am looking to get a Center Console fishing (blues/stripers/fluke) boat to use for the following:

1) Fishing bays around Sag Harbor, NY (Peconic/Gardiners/etc.) and venturing around Montauk Point.

2) Fishing LI Sound off CT coast b/w Stamford & New Haven areas

3) Tubing/touring from our house in Sag Harbor Cove.

As most, I have a limited budget and am looking for best bang for buck.

Any suggestions on size, hp, budget, etc.?

Thanks!

Go to Surfside 3. They have a lot of used boats on brokerage and on inventory. Talk to them. They can sometimes give bargains especially to first time buyers. Excellent people and service. And they will guarantee the boat for 90 days. Most serious fishing boats are outboards - doubt it's recommended for tubing.

If your going out with your family, get something other than a center console. My BIL has one - he loves it and his family hates it. You can fish out of anything, but all you can do is fish from a center console. If you have kids get something with a cabin or a day cruiser.

I boat out there on those waters all the time. Hardly ever see a center console where the guys are fishing over by the channel around Shelter Island. I see lots of 17 - 23 ft cuddy style fishing rigs and day cruisers.

Just something to think about. (or ask Billy Joel, he has a house in Sag Harbor and you see his boats tied up at the Sag Harbor Marina often) ;)

Thanks for the advice Mark. I have seen the Piano Man's boats in the harbor...across from the VFW. I imagine he finds time to go out when he is not crashing into old ladies homes...

Good point about the CC vs. cabin.

Harbor Master told me last week that they are putting in a new ramp for next season. I hope so the one they have is falling apart! So if you trailer and launch it will be a good launch site. Never a line.

Actually, my house is on Inner Sag Harbor Cove and I would love to moor the boat during the season. Do you know anything about getting permission to moor a boat? Is it tough to get approved?

I had looked into that last year and forget the actual cost for the permit but it did seem resonable at the time. I had asked the Harbor Master about it. Start by giving him a call. Really nice guy. There are forms and such plus the expense of the mooring itsself. And unless you have a friend with a big boat, add the cost of having a service install it for you.

The cove is well protected and a nice place to have a house! There are not many moorings there that I remember. Most houses have a dock, so I suspect you won't have any trouble. Is there a Harbor Cove Association that you might need to contact?

I'll be there again in the middle of August. Keep an eye out for me at the ramp and say hello.
