Hi,

Where is the pee hole for a Johnson 9.5 Model MQ10 R? I believe it is a 1964.
As I see no water coming out other than the exhaust, I am afraid to run it long.

Please advise.

Thanks in advance.

It is a 1964.

There will be no tell tale or pee hole as you might expect from a modern outboard. There should be misting from the leg and prop though.

Is she overheating at all?

If this a new outboard to you, I would personally change the water pump regardless. Peace of mind.

mine spits out the exhaust as mentioned, seems to me my 9.5 runs hotter that some other outboards I've run but that could just be mine

Chris,

Thank you for your advise. I have had the OB for two years but never noticed the lack of a pee hole before. Ah.....aging is so much fun at times.

Having said that, I let it run for 5 minutes and it reach 218 degrees F, as measured with a non contact thermometer. I shut it down.

There is a corrugated rubber hose about 3 inches long and 1 inch in diameter running from the engine to the right rear of the housing. It has some steam coming from it.

It looks like it is overheating wouldn't you agree?

Thanks,

Stan

there should be water coming out of that hose, I'd check the impeller and replace it.

The thermostat is 140 degrees, same as most, so the temperature should be similar to other engines. Water should be spitting from the exhaust relief, as shown in Philip G's photo, anytime the engine is running.

Th 9.5 won't cool properly in a bucket unless the motor is deep enough in water to cover the water pump so that the pump can prime.

Thank you Supreme Mariner,

When I raised the water level to your specifications, it started pumping water. The pee hole is the at the end of the hose on the right rear of the housing.

The motor ran 10 minutes @ 125 degrees F.

Thanks to all who offered help. You are the greatest!!
