PEE-HOLE IN MY JOHNSON TOO BIG????

Hi everyone.... couldn't think of a better subject title than this considering the question i have. I have an 89 johnson GT200 and sometimes it overheats when idling... the buzzer goes off and everything. On my motor where the water shoots out of it, there is a threaded plastic tube (with a plastic nut locking it in place onto the housing) that sticks out of the motor housing. My question is.... is there supposed to be an "end" of some sort that screws onto this threaded pipe with a SMALLER hole in the end so that the water actually builds up enough pressure to be forced out instead of just dribbling and running out like someone is pouring water down an empty tube?? My thinking is if there was a smaller hole in the end of the water line smaller than a 3/8 inch hole maybe the water pump wouldn't lose it's prime when the motor is at lower RPM's. Does this make any sense to anyone? any help would be appreciated, as it's kind of embarrasing when the warning buzzer goes off when i'm trying to troll to my favorite fishing spot with all my pals around me in their boats. Thanks for any help!!

Matt

sounds like you need to check/change your water pump impeller. You should have enough pressure at idle period. The water pump is submerged, so it is primed all the time. Whatever the problem is.. you better get it fixed before you cost yourself some $$$

You may be right.
My buddy has a 9.8 Mercury and he asked an outboard repairman if he could drill out the pee hole so more water could flow out. The repairman said to leave it alone because if the hole was bigger there wouldn't be sufficient water pressure in the motor.
Try and find an exploded parts list on the internet for your outboard. Hopefully it will show if you need something on the end of that hose.

Nebraska,You need to find out when the waterpump was last replaced. This is an item that needs attention every couple of boating seasons. Also Bombardier has changed the designs of some of their waterpump impellers and the replacement kit for some come with a larger overboard discharge orifice to accomodate the change in pump volume. My 96' 70 hp Evinrude is one example. It is also advisable to inspect or replace the T/stat to insure it is opening fully when engine is up to temp. Some of these have also been redesigned with different springs and are matched with the redesigned pump if this change affects your particular engine.Best to contact your local dealer as he can apprise you of any changes in pump or T/stat design that applies to your engine.Good luck.

NW....
i have a evinrude 250 with the same hole. if you take off your hood you probally have several hoses going to the pee-hole. one of them is a siphon to drain your cowling when submerged.the main hose is very small. hope this helps. do your self a favor and get a new impeller and water pressure guage.that way you KNOW how much pressure you have. i have 6 psi at idle.....james

Re: PEE-HOLE IN MY JOHNSON TOO BIG????

hey guys, to answer the question, the water pump was replaced at the beginning of last year when I bought the boat. Also... I know that the cylinders pressures are all around 90 psi or so. I've been told that this is low and should be addressed. Does the cylinder pressure have anything to do with less pressure in the water pump, or is that a totally separate monster i'm dealing with? I've been thinking of having someone totally overhaul the motor thinking that if everything is worn down from overall use, that is why little things seem to go goofy every once in a while with it. if anyone around the midwest is reading this, can you tell me what an average price for labor and parts this could run for me? 1500, 2000? more? thanks all!

Your compression is OK. The stock water indicator size is fine.

If the complete kit was not replaced (many times just the impeller gets replaced) OR it was not an E/J kit I would start there. You may want to take a look at the head gaskets too.

Good luck!

Go to your dealer and get a complete Evinrude / Johnson (Bombardier) kit. Lets start there.

Keep us informed!

And we're all assuming that I know how to do this mechanical stuff hu? lol. I will talk to a dealer as well and get their recommendations too.... very possibly starting with that kit. Thanks to all responses.

speaking of exploded parts view..... does anyone know where (or what) website to look for to find this?? I've racked my brain, but I can't seem to come up with anything on the internet...... anyone got a website handy that could share with me that info?

Hi Woody,

I had the same problem with my 94 Johnson.

It would overheat, but only at idle.

It turned out that "one" of the two
thermostats was sticking closed.

If I throttled up, it would pop open and
the motor would run fine.

I took it out, cleaned some grit out of it,
and never have had a problem since.

Hope this helps
Barman

Re: PEE-HOLE IN MY JOHNSON TOO BIG????

Hey everyone, thanks for all the good information..... and they say boaters and anglers are only full of sh*t??? lol. (or maybe they were just talking about me??? I dont know... I try to keep things interesting though. Thanks for all the responses... to me the last response seems maybe that is more logical at the moment than my pee hole being overly large. I'll find someone who can help me with the thermostats and make sure they are in working order. Hey, could in any way shape or form a thermostat be the culprit of a rough (and sometimes dieing engine) idle??

better take care of that "pee hole" problem first, then see how it runs.

Re: PEE-HOLE IN MY JOHNSON TOO BIG????

That's the thing catfish, I dont know if I need another "end cap" to screw onto the threaded tube that's sticking out of the motor housing. I looked on that website that one of the other guys listed and I can't really tell from the diagram if one goes on there or not. I'm still up in the air about that goofy little part missing or not missing....
