You have seen this motor, I know it! My grandson has it, his neighbor gave it to him a few months ago, that neighbor got it from some one else. No history of course. 3.5 Nissan with forward and neutral , maybe a 96 or 98, NS3.5B2 model he thinks.

1. water drips, dribbles but not a full stream at idle from the pee hole, steady solid stream at full throttle but not a high pressure stream.

Whats common on small motors like this for water output?

2. shift lever- very very hard to shift- we pulled the small plate off and lubed inside it with maybe only a 5% improvement. if you take the foot off it shifts fine on the foot, so the problem sems to be in the shift lever where it goes thru the motor cowling. IS this a unique dealer fix? or can an good 0/b mechanic fix it

IS there an online source for Nissan Tohatsu parts? The Tohatsu (I think) web site says say they only sell thru authorized dealers. Mine is 30 miles away

I bought this motor new and yes at idle you it does not have a solid stream of water. when it idles up you will get a solid stream of you don't replace the water pump its easy and cheap on that motor. As for the gear shift they it was stiff when it was new. But all in all thats a great little motor!

You might want to try the Guru's website at www.internetoutboards.com. Not only does he sell/ship parts anywhere, he also has the parts catalogs available (for free) on his website. Looking at the parts catalog might help you determine where your problem is with the shifter.

It's normal for 3.5 engines to pee very slight at idle, betters as speed increases, will not splash hard if you put your hand to feel the pee pressure. Is your gear shift lever properly greased, with time grease dries out and makes the gearing harder.

Quite true all... any dealer (including the place where I work) can sell you a wp kit... the stream is not like a fire hose on these, but it should be a fairly solid stream even at idle.

On a motor of this vintage, and unknown service history, a wp kit would not be a bad investment. And if you do decide to get one, don't cheap-out and get only the impeller... for a few bucks more, you get the cup and wear plate -- often scored and worn -- as well as gaskets in the kit.
