Hello, I am new to ocean fishing and came across a penn 60 and 80. I am wondering what if these reels could be used for tuna fishing? I am a total novice and can use all the help I can get. Thanks Ray

We use the Penn 50 and Penn 80 for tuna, depending on size..... the 80 should handle anything you can.

Depends on where you are at and the size of tuna you'll be catching. I don't think I've ever seen an 80 out here in the west coast for short 1-2-3 day trips, usually long range 10+ days trips use that type of gear,,, most of those guys are using 50's though. The 50 would work as a trolling reel for short trips (overkill), or for long range trips. But again, you have to match the gear with what you will be catching.

I've only caught 1 tuna on my 50 2spd.:rolleyes: Lots of them on my smaller reels though...

Re: penn reels

As people have said, it depends on how you fish, what type of fish and what size of fish your after.

Around here, 50's are the norm. Everything is on the troll and you never know what might turn up on the end of the line. There was a #1010.5 Blue Marlin caught during one of our recent local tournaments.

Lots of 80's in use as well. Come winter, it's time for 80's and 130's when the "Giants" make their appearance.
