Pemaqid skiff powering

I just picked up a nice 5 year old Pemaquid skiff from original owner. 13.8’ length, 5.3’ beam, 20” transom, flat bottom (no skeg) and is solid glass and feels it. I’ll be using for non commercial lobstering and island hopping fairly close to shore. The original owner was an older gentleman doing about the same activity with it, said he used 6hp outboard and had tried 9.9 and it was too much. I don’t yet have an out board, so am thinking 6 seems under powered (though the bottom is obviously slick), I don’t have the exact weight (I might call the builder and see what they say) but I’m guessing about 400lbs.

Any thoughts on optimal powering?

This is a low production skiff from a small boat yard and is not tagged. Otherwise I’d just look.

I’m not looking for maximum powering, but reasonable for intended use. 6hp for one person let alone two of my wife comes with me seemed really under powered. I have requested information from the builder but haven’t heard back.

I think you'll notice a bit of a difference between the 9 and the 6, but I wouldn't think it will be too dramatic. With this exception: if you're in any kind of wind or chop, the extra couple HP might be a little helpful.

Sitting on those side seats at the tiller is gonna' make running at full speed with just one person interesting anyway. It's a convenient setup, but your CG is WAY off. I don't think that boat is setup for "planing" as much as it is a displacement layout.

Interesting little boat though.

Welcome aboard.

buy a tiller extension and sit at the bench seat if you are alone. If you have a passenger have them sit front left with you on the right.
