Looking at a used Penn 309 on a Penn Senator rod a buddy has, and would like some opinions. I really was looking for a Senator 4/0, but the price is way right on this combo. Is this a decent all-around combo? I mostly bottom fish, but also want to troll with it. I fish the Gulf to about 60', and I chase whatever is running.

Watch ebay. I just picked up an unused Penn 340 for just under $50 delivered. Love it. Fantastic for crankin' them big lings off the bottom and trolling for albacore.

Well, just grabbed a Penn 4/0 (113) for $40 off ebay. Gotta love the Buy It Now!

Re: Penn 309?

I thought it was a fair deal. I'm also going to get that 309. It's on a sweet Penn Senator Trolling rod, and put the 113H on that, and move the 309 over to an AllStar rod I have that needs a reel. The AllStar I got from a WM when they were closing, and got it for $25, so grand total of $125 for 2 good setups. I think I done good.

Keep a good eye out on the screws and cross bars on the 309. They're a good reel but it doesn't take much to "torque" one. I've had more than one get "torqued" and locked up with a good fish on the line. Sold the four I had and went to Penn 330
