Penn Yan tunnel drive throws rooster tail...

I've got a 1970 Penn Yan, 22 foot with a 318 Chrysler inboard. The propeller is brass and clears the tunnel by about 2 inches all the way around. When I get underway, it seems that I am losing a lot of thrust by the large rooster tail behind the boat. Any suggestions? I don't know if the prop is original equipment or not.

Hi jwib...We have the same boat and she is known to throw a rooster tail, but only up to a certain speed. My results are up to 3000 rpm she throws a rooster tail. 3200 the tail levels out doing 18mph, at 3500 she is doing 21mph on top of the water running and at WOT 4500 she does 29mph. I hace a 12X13 prop. I get a little cavitation at 1000rpm and some at a high RPM while making a sharp turn.

Check out the Penn Yan owners site an you will find this to be normal.

Good Luck!

Hi fisherguy123....here is a photo at just planing speed (18kts). Below this speed she throws up a tail appx. 4 feet, above this speed the tail goes away. It's not as high as a surface drive but the prop runs in a tunnel only a few inches below the waterline. At rest the bottom of the prop is only 18 inches from waterline.

Pic looks KOOL as my grandson would say, that is a nice boat....not too big and not too small. I almost bought one that size here last year but my old truck (94 Mazda) packed it in on the way to look at the boat, so I bought a new truck instead. Can`t have it all eh ! Only got 3 years to retire so I might get a cruiser then when I have more leisure time to use it. Wife says I got too many boats now. ( 2 kayaks, open fishing boat, an old Chrysler Valiant I just bought). I don`t think you can have too many!!!!!!
