Re: Pennzoil-Walmart

When I was a widdle kid I used to love watching my Dad cut the grass because his old pieceocrap lawnmower burned oil and stunk real bad and it made me think of going boating. He usually mowed on Saturday and we took the boat out on Sunday.

So, OB motors burn oil. Smell and blue fog - so what? Duh.

My every-day kickabout OB is over 40 years old. She runs WOT most of the time. I DO use brand name oil, but never synthetic. She smells. Duh again. Haven't decarboned her yet. I mean, how long does she need to last?

I'm one of the ones against synthetic. Not that I'll tell you not to buy it, but rather that I personally don't see the need. If you like it, go ahead and use it. If you need to keep ,your motor 60 years, maybe you need it. If the old lady doesn't like smoke, maybe you need it. My old lady doesn't smell like Chanel #9, she smells like Hoppes #9. But that's a topic for another forum!

Not everyone runs WOT all the time to burn off the build-up and not everyone likes to breath a known carcinogenic 6-8 hours a day, 5-6 days a week.

Idle your outboard 6-7 hours in 50 degree water. Then get back to us about how wonderful it smells, how many plugs you fouled, and how much unburnt oil you have dripping out your exhaust ports. That is, if your motor even idle for 6-7 hours non-stop?

How long does it need to last? With a replacement cost of $14K, as long as I can keep it running.

I made the comment about running WOT because many people claim synthetic oil will make the motor last longer. I would think in that regard WOT would be the most severe condition.

OK, I'll bite about the plug fouling as well.....one of my other motors is now 27 years old, and it NEVER runs WOT. Its a kicker with about 600 hours and it runs at idle for 5-6 hours at a time. At the end of the day I kick it up for 1 or 2 minutes, then shut it off. It hasn't been decarbonized either.

In either case, neither smokes continuously. Maybe at startup, or for a few seconds when going to WOT after idleing all morning.

But whatever. As I said if syn smokes your boat, go for it. I just don't see the need.

Many people think synthetic oil is a waste and does nothing different then convetional oil.Well who knows the hard facts as this oil war will never end.I would say it's 50/50 for both.

Sythetic oils tend to maintain viscosity better and they have better "shear characteristics." The botom line, is that they do a better job of keeping metal parts from touching one another, so ther is less wear.

All i know is synthetic oil is becoming way more common in cars coming out of the factory today so there must be something behind it i would think.I do think synthetic oil lubricates better at any given rpm as in wot or just idleing, jim i think your getting the wrong idea here i will never knock the reg walmart oil or any tcw3 oil as long as it's certified for water cooled 2cycle engines.I just personally don't like eating smoke all day and the synthetic oil to me cuts the smoke down to like nill.I like the smell of a 2stroke also but not for hrs on hrs in my nose it tends to get annoying and that is all i'm saying.I have ran the walmart super tech forever with no problems whatsoever as i think it's great oil, also from what i hear it's rewrapped pennzoil.Who knows what brand it is but it works. Also i figured if it will be biodegradable why not help the world out to.So as far as we know it lubricates better, almost no smoke if any, less chance to decarbon your motor, biodegradable, what is there not to love about any synthetic oil, price i guess.Like i said imo i will always buy full synthetic oil as long as i can find it as it gives me piece of mind and i only have a $1000 motor but thats ok.I run it in everything i own.

If everything is running normally, either dino or synthetic oil will perform just fine. It's when you hit a plastic bag, wrap it around the water pickup, and temporarily grossly overheat your engine between the time you hear the alarm and respond to it that synthetic shines. At extreme temperatures it still has some film strength when dino oil has burned off and left you with metal to metal.

I use the pennzoil full synthetic at about 25 a gallon.

The price dropped on Saturday to $17.00 a gallon and I stocked up on it from what was left from my local Walmart.
Excellent deal!!!.

Re: Pennzoil-Walmart

I have hit every walmart in my area and they are out of it now.I managed 20 gallons before they were all out so that will last me a good while.Plus i found a deal on a 25hp 2stroke yamaha as i thought they were gone from my area. There is a place here is fl that stocked up on them and they have over 100 of them,i told the guy holy cow. They new the end of these motors was close so they bought all of them up.But the moral of the story is i will have my oil even longer now as i only have to use half in the yamaha at 100:1 instead of 50:1 in my merc so i will save a ton of money and the oil will last me twice as long.J MARTIN you are 100% right i guess it is just a personal preference on what oil to use for me and most people as what you said is right, any tcw3 oil is just as good as the next but i will use the full synthetic oil as long as it's still available. The super tech oil is outstanding i just like the pennzoil for all the reasons mentioned.
