During the process of replacing the u-joint bellows, I discovered that the u-joints needed to be replaced. The current OEM part number is 853255 via the Volvo Penta store. This part is hard to find. I saw in an earlier thread that there was another option, a Spicer 5-1306X. This Spicer u-joint has been discontinued and the replacement is the Spicer 5-789X. The Spicer 5-789X cross references over to yet another option, the Moog 377. Both of these u-joints are readily available at parts stores.

Here is my question: Has anybody ever tried any of these alternative u-joints in a Penta 270 outdrive?

I have used automotive U-joints in a sterndrive with no problems. I can't see any reason why they won't work as long as they are the correct size. If possible, remove the old U-joints and take them to the parts store and verify they are the same.

I found a cross reference list on this or another website. I don't recall what we used on our aq280, but I opted to get u joints with grease fittings. Have you tried the search function?

depends on which center you have. the updated shaft is GKN parts, not sure what the older shaft is. I believe the late Don S has this information in the volvo stickies

I used the joints from a 1982 Dodge pickup. A good independent “if you can find one” auto store who still uses books and does not need to know what color the truck is they are for.
