Honestly curious here and not in any way attempting to be a provocateur, but would anyone out there be willing to say that Penzoil synthetic blend at Wal Mart is better than Quicksilver Mercury oil in addition to being cheaper? I've been using it in my recently rebuilt Mercury Inline 1500 during the break in period and was planning to stay with it unless anyone here offers a compelling reason not to..

Thanks for the replies.

There is NO reason not to! Great oil! Great value.

Re: Penzoil synthetic blend?

I have OMC motors and usually use that brand of oil, but there's been a couple of times I've bought the gallon jug of the Pennzoil blend. My motors ran just great with it, and the main reason I use the OMC oil is that I get it at about the same price. The main reason I don't use the Pennzoil blend is that I don't like going to Wal-mart ...just a thought :)

After many years of testing we use the Pennzoil Blend as the standard on all recreational tests regardless of brand or model of motor.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I will keep using it. Chief 101, I'm with you on the Wal-Mart observation. Do you know if the beleaguered K-Mart chain sells it? I do try and buy what I can from the local guy even if it costs a little more when possible.

K-mart does stock it around here. It's about 50 cents a gallon more than the Super Wal-Mart but the less crowded deal is well worth the 2 quarters.

What Dhadley says...I would rather buy a few nice things from my friends than have a houseful and a barnful of Walmart stuff...just a thought :)

Unfortunately, I buy my penzoil synth blend (stuff works fine for me) from the Wal-Mart. I actually despise that place, but they are dramatically less expensive that anyone else around here. I do try to buy from my local stores as well, but I figure that the people working in my Wal-Mart are locals, they need the paychecks, so I don't feel totally bad shopping there. In the end, I go where the deal is.

I don't know how much WM sells Penzoil blend for. My local boat dealer sells Mercury premium plus for $2.50 a pint, $15 a gallon, and $12 per gallon for bulk oil. I think WM only beats them on the pint price and then by only $.12 (I'm referring to OMC or Quicksiver)! The only time I buy outboard oil from WM is when I can't get to the dealer. Support the little guy when you can; WM does not carry impellers......

Around here the P/Blend is 9.49 a gallon at Wal Mart and 9.99 at K Mart. I would buy it from the local dealer but he doesnt stock it although he has the opportunity to. True, it would cost almost 2.00 more per gallon because of purchase volume but I would still buy it from him if he had it.

Re: Penzoil synthetic blend?

Around here, Walmart sells the pennzoil full synthetic for around $19. They don't sell the blend! (But if they do, I'll probably try a gallon... the full synthetic didn't seem to have any effect). I can get either OMC or Quicksilver oil in bulk for around $15-$17 per gal. But it's a 45 minute round trip, plus waiting for them to dispense from the bulk barrel - all in all probably an hour deal for the 2 - 3 gallons I buy at a time. Lately, I found Castrol Super Outboard oil at the local hardware store (as close to a mom and pop as I have). It goes for around $11 per gallon (in cases of quarts), around $12 per gallon if bought individual quarts. But the "transaction cost" is SO SMALL at the hardware store - park right in front, walk right in, grab a case, no line at the checkout. It's close to home and on the way from work. I'd say it saves me, all told, an hour compared to the boat shop and a half hour compared to Wally World.

To me, the real or imagined differences between various flavors of "good quality" oil are far, as well as a couple bucks difference in price per gal., are far trumped by simple convenience of source.

Ive been running the full penn synthetic, but its fairly expensive, would the blend function as well or is the full synth. better?

Re: Penzoil synthetic blend?

ddiagle, that's a subject that been argued here to the point of name calling. If the oil is rated Tc-w3 it will have been extensively tested to insure that it meets or exceeds what the manufacturers of outboard motors engineered their motors to run on. If you want to use a more expensive veriety than necessary that's up to you and your testing methods. I would try the blend and see if there is enough of a diference to warrant staying with the costlier oil...just my thought on the subject :)

Chief101:

You seem to be a little tough on us synthetic guys, :p But I do have to agree with you most of the time. I use a full synthetic because I imagine my outboard with a big grin on its face when I do. :D :D ;)

Re: Penzoil synthetic blend?

My wally prices synth blend out at under $10 a gallon, no one else here sells it. They just started selling the full synth as well, under $20 a gallon. My motors are ancient, a 69 merc 1250, and a 54 Goodyear Seabee. Synth blend is about as "high tech" as I am willing to go. The Goodyear has really responded well to the synth blend, still mixed at 24:1. It starts much easier and runs very well. The Merc 1250 has seemed less smokey, and seems to sound a bit less noisy on the synth blend. Bear in mind I was running Supertech before. That stuff worked, but I feel like the synth blend is working better enough to justify the added cost. I only buy about 2-3 gallons a year, so its not like I am spending huge loot on it...

Re: Penzoil synthetic blend?

Not at all LD...I only suggest that one see's for oneself if one's motor shows enough improvement to warrant a change, to or fro. I don't care what oil anybody uses, but when someone asks if they should change from one certified oil to another that's exactly what I tell them...try it, and if you like it use it. They're all good...just a thought :)
