Pepto Bismol looking trim tilt fluid in resevoir

OK probably been asked here a lot of times but my white plastic fluid container has what looks like Pepto Bismol in it.

Now I did try my best to replace the fluid once and I am pretty sure I used red ATF to do it. I disconnected my mesh covered hi pressure hoses on my outdrive and got as much of the pink stuff out that I could. I did this til only red clear fluid came out. I may have even used the right stuff and not ATF. but after running the boat in the water for a day on the river, the Pepto Bismol color was back.

First thing we think of is leaks in seals or hoses right?
A fella who helped me winterize this year said that it may not be water in the fluid.
He said it might be the result of high pressure and the pink comes from tiny bubbles in the fluid. ehhh?
I dunno about that?
He also said it might be a mixture of the wrong kind of fluid in with what is supposed to be in there and remained.

I am curious what this will look like in the reservoir when I go to pick up my boat in storage.
Will the water have separated in the reservoir from the red fluid from sitting that long?
Will the red be floating on the water?
What do you think? My specifics are in my signature for my units. Thanks!

Ayuh,.... When ya flushed the system, did ya lift, 'n lower the drive several times, by hand, to purge the rams of their oil,..??

It usually takes a few purge/ flushes to clear a water contaminated system,...

assuming you do not have water in the system

make sure the pump reservoir is full. if you run it low, you will cavitate the pump, causing the oil to froth up.

cavitation is bad.

A pink medicinal liquid sold in the States for upset tummies. It's a very bright pink color.

And I'm not. ;) I did google it, just a load of medical bumff... So, it's pink and frothy... Why didn't the man just say that....

Oh well, whatever...

Pink frothy oil in the trim system. Could be air, could be water. Do a crackle test....

Chris....

I just assumed every body knew what Pepto Bismol was.
OK it looks like strawberry flavored milk. The reservoir is full, I did lift and lower the outdrive unit. I think regardless of whatever causes this I will completely empty the whole system and replace with the recommended fluid. I am seeing that ATF is OK but mixing may cause some foaming.

Since Chris didn't know what Pepto is or was, I assume he's getting back at us. :D

I'm guessin' the crackle test is to heat the Pepto above boiling (100? or 212? depending on location) and see if water in the oil boils or crackles. Wear protection in case it spatters.

Good Job GA, nice global approach, covered technical and safety, even referenced the two major temp scales so no confusion, bravo!

Some of my fellow boaters put some thought into this and they agreed it could be that there's a lot of pressure in those hydraulic lines for tilt and trim and returning to the reservoir under that pressure may cause tiny bubbles in the fluid reservoir and the air causes it to look like a milky pink fluid rather than the clear red ATF I put in there in the first place. After the boat sat all winter, I looked in the reservoir and it was clear red. It maybe takes a long time to settle and for the bubbles to rise. I pumped all the fluid out and replaced it anyway, and there wasn't any water separation at the bottom or the top. I think it was just pressure and very tiny air bubbles trapped in the fluid. I don't think it is an issue.
