Sorry I didn't respond to your previous post. Must of missed it last week. The ride quality of my 18' compared to my previous 16' is night and day. The 18' is bigger in every dimension than the 16' so it's a much more substantial craft and therefore handles the chop much better. And it still fits in my garage (with just inches to spare). But you be the judge. They are both great boats.

Dang, now i wish i pulled the trigger... All well, for the calm bays i crab out of, and mostly fish kokanee/trout out of lakes, i think a 16ft will serve me well.

I've got my eye on this one, if only the guy would price it reasonably... he started at 4500.00 so we are on our way to a new boat !

Click on the "Starcraft brochures" link in any of my posts and you will find more info than you could possibly need.;)

16 SS rated for 85hp, 18 rated for 150 ballpark

Oregon, I had 2 of these back in the day, with 55's on them.

Thinks to look for: leaking rivets
correct paint on bottom (some bottom paint corrodes aluminum)
check the joints where the transom/splashwell joins the gunwales (and don't sit or step there).
The flop-out seats tend to fall apart (depending on care or lack thereof I'm sure, plus people sitting on the backs).

Lakes and small bays will be fine--I used to take mine where I shouldn't, and managed to return.

If the engine is also from the 70's I think he may be high on the price; others would know better. But if you are certain as to good condition and maintenance, it may be worth it to pay more than market.

Wow that link for brosho's is excellent ! With only a 1 person/400lb weight holding difference, i think the 16 with 7person capabilities will be just right for what i need. I think after all i'm going to keep my seaswirl,in a perfect world i could find a good priced 18ft to take crabbing and tubing, but i think having two will let me not have to worry about beating up my 16fter crabbing and fishing in sale water, and leave the 17ft ski boat home for tubing around and such. I just with my seaswirl got better gas milage, its a killer !

cookin, also thanks for your imput, agree'd its always fun to take boats places they shouldn't, as long as you get home to tell the tail !

Found a local 1969 18 dual axle boat that looks from pics to be in very decent shape... i figure for crabbing and putting around i'd slap on something small like 65 and be completly content, i still would prefer a 16ft but this guy isn't asking much, so might do it.

That's a decent amount of money for no motor....

you certainly don't need dual axles for that boat, so if the trailer's that good, sell it and get an old single for cheap, put the money into the motor

Re: Perfect Fishing and Tubing Boat ? Even Possible ?

I just sold a 17 foot Xpress with a90 yamaha that I had for five years. I purchased a bowrider because we wanted to do more watersports. It was a great boat but would not comfortably seat four adults and tubes etc. It also was very rough in rough water. I would never have put it in more than two foot chop ever. A deep v Starcraft or Lund would probably serve you well if you want to go with an aluminum hull. If not a larger (over18) bass boat based fish n ski might work for you. Down here in Al. we don't see many deep v fishing rigs but they are all over the great lakes. Look at boats marketed to walleye fishermen, that might work well for you. Any combo boat is by definition a compromise.
