As I mentioned in the past in other posts, I am new to boating. Im having a delima when it comes to getting on plane. Is it better to lower the bow and seem to almost run slower, or raise the bow while under way and get more RPM's.

Re: performance.

Trim it all the way down (in) and floor it.

Re: performance.

Then, once up on plane, start trimming it out untill the speed maxes out or it starts to cavitate. It's a feel thing. You'll get used to it.

Re: performance.

I've heard somewhere that roller rocker arms are better. Maybe that would let it plane faster.

Re: performance.

He probably means when the engine revs up due to the prop "blowing out"

I trim up just till the boat starts to porpoise, then lower a bit.

Re: performance.

Agree its a Feel thing and a sound thing. Feeling the Boat Speed up and listening to the RPMs Increasing without touching the throttle.

Yup - as you raise the prop, eventually, it will suck air down and cause the prop to loose bite. You will know as RPM's will shoot up and speed will drop. You want to run just below that, or just below where the handling changes - which ever you hit first as you are trimming up.

Re: performance.

I agree with the feel aspect. I had a friend try and explain timming to me and he said "you will feel it when you get it right." Sure enough I got on plane trimmed all the way down. Kind of a rough ride and RPM's a bit low. Started trimming up and about the time the rpms got where they needed to be the ride smoothed out. It is very noticable. Almost like sitting still on a calm day.

Re: performance.

So if I understand it correctly, you want your prop to run just below the water line then correct?

Re: performance.

Porpoising is when your bow rises up out of the water and falls back down due to you being trimmed to high. Kind of like a dolphin jumpimg out of the water.
