Going to replace the gimbal bearing while the outdrive is off (SN below in signature). It feels smooth but I can hear it spinning when rotating the alignment tool. It may be on the way out.

I have the perma lube bearing currently installed and want to use a similar part. I can go with the merc replacement (30-879194A01) or the sierra (18-21006). I am leaning towards OEM. Any thoughts?

The service bulletin says to clock the bearing at 10, but why is this necessary if there is no grease hole that needs to be aligned?

Will a rented puller from the auto part store work or should I buy a gimbal bearing puller?

I've learned that using the wrong tools makes the task harder and take longer...

Went with OEM. Bought a puller. I assume it has to be clocked to align where the grease hole would be with the hole in the drive.

Any one put a little grease on the outside of the bearing or put it in the freezer for easier install?

I put it in freezer overnight.
Transferred it to small iced cooler.
(Left room for beer)
Heated gimbal area with hair dryer.
Ready nylon punch n hammer.
Removed from ice.
Tapped it in place, didn't go real easy.
Worked for me.

I’ve never had an issue getting them in , a little grease keeps corrosion at bay, I’ve used a 1” wooden dowel and. 3” pvc pipe to knock them in . It’s not that technical don’t sweat it

Thanks. I am not too worried about it. Should be straight forward. Just seeing if there were any trick before knocking it out.
