Permanently disengaging Quickstart??

Hey guys '95 OMC 130HP. I found out my timing is all over the place when starting the motor, sometimes even after it warms up, only in idle. I disconnected the black/white wire from the powerpack and jumped it to ground. I also disconnected the yellow/red wire INSIDE the power pack. Motor ran great and stopped all of the BS. (Haven't decided if it is a bad temp switch or pack, but I do know that overhead alarm sounds when I ground the temp switch out) but for now if I want to run it like this do I need to leave the yellow/red wires disconnected as well? Or just keep white/black wire grounded?

If your motor is wired the same as my '98 Johnny 150HPV6 60* engine, the yellow/red supplies voltage to the powerpack during engine cranking with the starter. When the motor starts, no more voltage on that wire. Black/white is the Quickstart signal wire. I think you disconnect it to disable Quickstart, but must defer to the experts, as I have never had any issue with it.

Gotcha. Well she still fires up just fine without the yellow/red wire hooked up. Maybe I should just hook it up and see if QuickStart stays disabled with the red/yellow wire connected?

So I figured out that the yellow/red wire going into the power pack only gets 12v when you turn the key to start the motor, just like the wire on the start solenoid. That is what triggers the QuickStart to come on in the powerpack, and as far as I know that is all it does. The white/black tells the QuickStart to disengage.
Sooooif you leave the yellow/red wire connected at the pack quickstartwill engage for 5 seconds and the white /black will cut it off when grounded. But if you disconnect the red/yellow wire, quickstart will never engage at all.

Are you sure that the yellow/red wire activates the Quickstart system? I had always thought the powerpack was provided +12VDC via the yellow/red wire when cranking to help produce spark at low RPM.

My service manual does not discuss the function of the yellow/red wire, in the Quickstart section.

Hmmmm, okay. It may do that as well, but I know that it does activate the Quickstart. It says so in the CDI troubleshooting manual. Strange that the motor cranks up just fine without the yellow/red wire connected though. I suppose it would do no harm to leave it connected as long as the black/white wire is grounded. I sure don't feel like pulling my cylinder head to change that temp sensor. Id rather just advance the throttle when warming up.
