Permatrim/Smart Tab Installation

HI, I have just installed a permatrim http://www.permatrimmarine.com/ which does not stop my 4.1metre ally boat from leaning to starboard when I am alone on it and it's still a bit of a rough ride in 1m swells.. I see in other forums where people have uninstalled their "hydrofoil" before installing the Smart Tabs. I don't want to take the permatrim off as 8 holes will be left on the caviation plate. Is there any good reason why I can not have both Smart Tabs and the Permatrim??

Hi HMAS,<br /><br />Welcome to this forum.<br /><br />I took off a foil from my AV plate, which left holes. I filled them with normal body filler, sprayed them from a matching aerosol, and a year later you can't tell they were ever there.<br /><br />Guess most of the guys here who've installed tabs will tell you to scrap the fin. That's what I did, and I'm very pleased with the results.

You can do AnyThing You Want............<br /><br />But,...........<br />I would Think that you're going to have a Serious "Bow Down" attitude.......<br />"Bow Steer" is going to be Atrocious..........<br /><br />Your hull Must have some serious Defects if you need to lift the stern That Much...........<br /><br />Those 8 holes Won't Hurt A Thing...........<br /><br />Without knowing more about your boats Handling Issues,..... Advise is hard to give...........<br /><br />The Leaning Issue is Usually caused by an Imbalanced Load................

There is a very good reason. You will lift the stern too much at cruising speeds and make the boat run bow down. The torque list to port that you are trying to eliminate will most likely get worse. The boat will loose top speed, and generaly handle poorly. If you want to get rid of the list, get on plane with ease, ride smooth in the choppy seas, eliminate the list and improve the top speed even with heavier loads install Smart Tabs ST980-30 or 40 depending on the motor HP. If you do not want to take the hydrofoil off, do not install Smart Tabs and try to tolerate what you have. Sorry for being so blunt but that is fact. Regards; John

try the boat a few more times with the foil. if you still don't like the performance, get rid of it. the holes probably won't do much, but you can fill as explained above.<br /><br />then research, and install some sort of tab system if you want to correct most of your problems.

HMAS, dump the foil, fill or not fill the holes the ride results will be so good you will not care. Scouts honor.

They have Smart Tabs on their web site, but there is no picture to see if they are the same as yours. Thanks for all the help.
