Ayuh,.... Correct,.....

That's why the slots go towards the motor, so's the entire bearin', carrier, 'n all is changed every time,.....

Check that the input shaft is true, 'n straight,.....

Thanks Bondo, one other piece of info from the owner, the boat developed a vibration a few trips prior to the coupler coming apart.

So should I be looking at replacing the rear mounts along with the coupler and gimbal bearing?

Being an 2008 engine, this model would have the newer type rear mounts...The change was done in 03. MCM Rear Engine Mount Design Change

Rear mount kit part number 865329A02. It will be your call if you'd like to replace them but personally I've haven't found them to fail all that easily. You did the alignment last time...Correct? All seemed good? You've seen achris's alignment video?

Here is your friends parts catalog for you if needed, http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/13808.cfm?mdl=QYXE8D&q=1A316906#

Is this a pontoon boat? One idea would be to try getting ahold of Mercruiser and inquire about if they did something a little different for the pontoons/aluminum boats to help strengthen the couplers possibly due to a solid front mount some boats did....I think they did something at one point around 2006ish but not positive on that.

Having a V6 keeps you from being able to use the heavy duty engine coupler made for the later model Bravo small/big blocks.

I don't believe this coupler is OEM but it might be of a different design to consider looking into. Maybe send them an email. https://www.perfprotech.com/coupler-engine-14-bravo-and-alpha-20-8418/product/248110

Like I just mentioned in another coupler topic, be sure to check your run outs of the coupler and flywheel while you're at it....Plus be sure to mount the new coupler like mentioned in the service bulletin.

Is the gimbal bearing a permalube gimbal bearing or greasable bearing?

Thanks FT. This is a 08 Crestliner not a pontoon. But the tag on the motor and services # indicate the motor is for a pontoon? Yes I did the alignment last time and it was smooth as silk. The bearing is greasable

Here's how the info shows using the engine number 1A316906. MERCRUISER 4.3A PONTN FL 4.3L ALPHA MPI. Due the front engine mounts seem normal or a solid mount? I think the mounts were going to be different but not sure of that.

Judging by the transom assembly serial number, your friends was getting to the end of the stockpile before going greaseless as I recall an older copy and paste of a service bulletin I did back in 2012, http://forums.iboats.com/forum/engin...es#post6089214

That bearing you showed must have been a Tuesday morning build after a long weekend...:D

Maybe muc would know more about the pontoon engine models.

Ayuh,.... I'd call it a pretty weird motor mount system,...

In this album, there's several shots, the cast mounts bolted to the block, the adjustin' bolts, 'n lower mounts look normal, but the crossbar mount to the hull is odd,....

That bearing carrier is way past worn out,....

Were the slots facin' aft when ya pulled it,..??

There is some flex to the motor mount cross member.

No they were facing forward!!

So now we come to the age old Chicken and Egg question? Do you all think the gimbel caused the coupler problems or the other way around?

Last time I did this coupler as soon as I saw the loose mount bolts I assumed they were the cause, but when I did the alignment I never noticed anything strange about the bearing.

Thanks again for all the help with this.

While the coupler is off turn over the engine to be sure the flywheel has no runout.
