Pertronix Coil hookup

Hey Everyone.. I decided to get myself a new coil. The Pertonix Flame Thrower 3ohm part number 40611. I have to go through all my wiring on the boat and clean up all contacts, corroded wires, old wires etc. I wanted to ask something.

Since I will have my main wire harness out and checking it over, can I add a new 14g wire to go from my new ignition switch back direct to the new coil? That way when it is switched to the on position, the coil will have it's 12 volts? Also any advice from you guys/gals that have put one of these in your boat would be great

Would that work? Sure, but is unnecessary. If you have an electric choke you can add a wire from there to the coil and bypass the resistance wire.

I guess I should ask... do you have the Pertronix ignitor as well?

What would be my options now?? Can I bump down the voltage then for the coil or is that not a good thing?

It is a 3 ohm coil, so it should work without the resistance wire. The 1.5 ohm coil would require the resistance wire. So it should br OK.

So it being a 3 ohm coil I will NOT burn my points? I can still use the points and condenser? Also I should still get he 12 volts needed for the coil correct? I just don't want to fry anything that's all

Out of curiosity, why did you pick this coil? I would have replaced with standard coil.

Wanted something that if I decided to switch to EI I could... Can I still use this coil with my points?

Just got off the phone with Pertronix. Told me to measure the Ohm's from the old coil and the ballast and it should be close to the 3.0 that the flamethrower has which means I will not burn out the points. If it is under, I can hook it up to the existing wire that has the lower voltage to be safe and no issues.

That's some good news for today Now off to check all the wiring!!!!
