The handles are good for steering them around and to assist getting them in the boat, but not really strong enough for actually lifting (at least a 75 lb Lab).

We have one for our 75lb Golden for all of the already mentioned reasons. And we have lifted her into the boat a couple of times by using the handle on the top of the jacket without a problem.
I would think if you buy a good quality jacket made for a dog upto 100 lbs, the handle should be fine to lift him from!
His old vest was built different than this one, and that ripped where the front of the lifting strap attached. This one seems better made, but I really have not tried to lift him with it. Looking at how this one is sewn, it might actually handle it.
